Consolation semifinal: Advance picks up second win season

After both posted their first wins of the season Thursday, Advance and Delta searched for a second Friday in the consolation bracket at the Southeast Missourian Christmas Tournament on Friday.

Advance pulled away in the second half for a 66-46 victory as David VanGennip scored 16 and Jacob Bond added 12.

"We just haven't been real consistent. We've been hurt and injured all year," Advance coach Joe Shoemaker said. "I feel like we're starting to get healthy. We're going in the right direction."

The first half was played at a frenzied pace, with Advance holding a 34-28 advantage.

Advance jumped out to early lead in both quarters, but Delta went on a 7-0 run in first quarter to pull close, and the Bobcats responded to Advance's 11-1 run to start the second quarter with a 12-4 run of their own to end the half.

The Bobcats, however, would have no response for the Hornets in the second half.

"We just talked about playing a little better as a team and playing with a little bit more energy and intensity," Shoemaker said.
