The win improves Oran's record to 6-4 on the season.
The final score shows a win by 12 points, but the game was tied several times, with a few lead changes, until Oran pulled away in the fourth quarter.
After the first quarter, the score was knotted at 8-8, but Oran began to pull away in the second quarter to head into halftime with a six point lead, 23-17.
East Prairie's Rianon Threstier had a big third quarter however, scoring six points and crashing the boards, as her team began to even up with the Oran Lady Eagles, and they went into the final quarter trailing by just two, 31-29.
The comeback that East Prairie mounted was quite a sight, but Oran's Claire Seyer scored six points in the fourth, alongside teammates Callie Kielhofner and Abbey Anderson who each scored four, to help their squad outscore East Prairie 20-10, as they went on to win 51-39.
Seyer led Oran in scoring with 12 points, while Anderson, Kielhofner and Cheyenne King each recorded 10 points apiece. Anderson also had six rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Defensively for the Oran Lady Eagles, Ellen Sikes had seven rebounds and three steals, while Taylor Tenkhoff recorded six rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
"We got some different kids in there (tonight)," Oran head coach Adam Friga said. "We're not playing hard. We've got to start playing harder. On a positive note, we didn't play well and still won the ball game and that's what matters."
"We're looking to get better every day for the district tournament," he added. "We base our entire season on trying to win the district."
For East Prairie, Threstier was the key reason they were in reach several times during the game, as she finished the night with a double-double, scoring 15 points and recording 15 rebounds. She also tacked on three steals, an assist and a block in the losing effort.
Guard Grace Swann also played well offensively, recording just four points, but controlled the floor, finishing with seven assists.
"I thought we played hard and worked hard," East Prairie head coach Steven Douglas said. "We just didn't execute. They put pressure on us, and the girls didn't execute."
"We spent too much time standing still," he added. "I thought we rebounded well and played pretty good defense, but we didn't execute on offense."
Douglas went on to say that his club will take positives out of the game, that they've lost several close games this season and that they will finish the season with more wins than they've recorded thus far.
With the loss, East Prairie falls to 1-7, and is eliminated from the tournament, while Oran will now face the Kelly Lady Hawks today at 8:30 p.m. in the second round.
Kelly 54, Chaffee 33
In earlier action, Kelly handed Chaffee the loss by winning in impressive fashion, 54-33.
For the Lady Hawks, Kayla Cissell stepped up and had a huge night, recording a double-double, with 17 points and 11 rebounds. She added three steals and two assists to her totals in the win.
Debra Hall also had a big night for Kelly, as she led all scorers with 19 points, and added four rebounds and a block.
The game began in the Lady Hawks' control, and ended just the same, as they jumped out to an early first quarter lead of 11-2.
At half-time, the Lady Devils had battled back to cut the deficit to seven points, 25-18.
The third quarter was all maroon and gold, as Kelly outscored Chaffee 20-5, basically sealing the deal, as they led 45-23 heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Hawks actually got outscored, but the one point margin wasn't enough for the Lady Devils to make a mark, as Kelly coasted to victory 54-33.
Kelly head coach Rod McQuerter said that his team came ready to play, and approached the game as they usually do, with good attitudes and a winning spirit.
"I'm very proud of our young girls, as well as our seniors," McQuerter said. "They stepped up for us a little bit. As young as we are, we just want to come out and compete every single night."
"Every game we just want to improve, and keep our positive attitudes," he added.
The other Lady Hawk to finish in double digits, was Londyn Backfisch, who controlled the tempo for Kelly. Backfisch finished the night with 12 points, five steals, three assists and a rebound.
Chaffee's Amber Kirk scored 12 points in the loss, which knocks them out of the tournament.
Up next for Kelly is a matchup against the Oran Lady Eagles in the second round tonight at 8:30 p.m. The winner will face the winner of the Delta vs. Scott City game in the championship on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
