Doniphan boys, Naylor girls have top seeds in OFC brackets

Doniphan and Naylor took the top seeds in the upcoming Ozark Foothills Conference boys and girls tournaments, which will take place Feb. 2-7 at Twin Rivers.

The championship games will take place Feb. 8 at Three Rivers Community College.

The Dons (11-4, 4-0 OFC) earned the first-round bye in the boys bracket and will face the winner of the game between No. 4 Clearwater and No. 5 Neelyville in the second round.

"We've played pretty consistently," Doniphan coach Jason Andrews said. "It's an honor to earn the top seed."

The Lady Eagles (14-2, 2-0 OFC) headline a particularly tight girls' field. They have already played a pair of close games with No. 2 seed Greenville. Doniphan claimed the No. 3 seed while host Twin Rivers came in fourth.

"Any of the top four or five could get hot," Naylor coach Gene Deckard said of the tournament field. "Greenville has weapons and Twin Rivers is playing on their home floor."

Deckard noted balance as a key characteristic of the conference this season.

The Lady Eagles will face the winner of the first-round game between Twin Rivers and Neelyville in the semifinals.

Twin Rivers Royals coach Rob Brown said his team's draw poses a couple of potentially challenging matchups. The second-seeded Royals will play East Carter in the first round with the winner facing either Naylor or Greenville.

"(Naylor's Travis) Thomas is the best player in the OFC," Brown said. "He can really take over Brown a game."

Brown also noted that Greenville's size could be a mismatch for the Royals, who have a trio of 6-foot-2 players maxing out their size. The Bears roster features 6-7 senior Corey Keele and 6-5 senior Tim Hill, who present matchup problems inside for most opponents.

Naylor coach Glen Eubanks said his young team, which is seeded third, is still figuring out how to be successful on the court.

"I'm trying to teach them how to win," he said.

The Greenville girls open tournament play with a first-round matchup with East Carter before a potential meeting with Doniphan in the semifinals. The Donettes face Clearwater in the first round.

"We are just going to focus on one game at a time," Lady Bears coach Diane Meyer said.

While her team has a good chance to advance to the final day of the tournament, Meyer said there are no guarantees at this point in the season.

"You have to beat good teams to get to the championship," she said. "There is no hole in the bracket."
