CHARLESTON -- Charleston held on to defeat Malden on Tuesday night, 75-60.
Malden brought it to a 55-50 game with six minutes still left, but the Bluejays went on to outscore the Green Wave 18-8 to close out the game and earn their second-straight win.
"I thought we played well, tonight," Bluejays coach Danny Farmer said. "They came back within five and we picked it up and got it back up to about 16 or 17. I thought it was a great effort offensively and defensively."
Donald Dixon led Charleston with 27 points. Antonio Riggens was right behind him with 23 and also connected for three 3-pointers. Brian Parham had 11 and Fred Pratt added 10 points.
Malden coach Robert Ison thought that despite the loss, he liked the way his team played after losing to Portageville on Friday.
"I thought they played real well," Ison said. "I criticized them a little bit for Friday's game. I thought they quit a little too early and didn't give it 100 percent. Tonight, they got down by 17, they fought back and played within five, so, I'm real proud of the effort."
Nick Perkins led all scorers with 29 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
"Ever since the second part of the season he has elevated his game, every game," Ison said. "Now is the time when you should be getting better. Nick has proven that he is one of the top players in Southeast Missouri and he keeps elevating his game."
Leonard Burton also proved to be a threat, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for the Green Wave.
Twin Rivers 80, Kennett 75
The Royals had a 16-point lead twice but held off Kennett at home Tuesday night.
"We finally got some stops in the second half," Twin Rivers coach Rob Brown said. "They tried to extend the game by fouling and we were able to hit enough free throws to survive."
Kenny Johnson was the Royals leading scorer with 22 points and Jordan Fowler added 20. Kyle Oberkramer finished with 17 while Dylan Stockton chipped in 13.
Twin Rivers (11-7) led 21-14 after one quarter and by eight half time but Kennett pulled within 55-49 after three quarters.
"They just kept clawing back and we got sloppy with the ball to let them right back in it," Brown said. "In close games we have done pretty good but we have to learn how to put someone away and pick up the intensity and put the hammer down."
Hayti 75, Neelyville 60
Jamestic Gooden scored 16 points and Denzel Presberry added 15 as the state-ranked Indians got out to an early double-digit lead.
"We cut it to six late in the third quarter, but they're just so athletic," said Neelyville coach James Patty of the Indians.
The Indians played the game without the post presence of William Cooper, who served a one-game suspension resulting from his ejection from Friday's game against Clarkton.
Without the imposing Cooper in the lane, Patty said he was pleased with his team's effort on the boards.
Daniel Cowin turned in a solid performance for the Tigers, recording a doubledouble with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
"Daniel had his best game of the year," Patty said.
Doniphan 65, Cape Central 47
Charles Wilson scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth quarter to help the Dons win on the road Tuesday night.
"He really stepped up in the second half, especially the fourth quarter," Doniphan coach Jason Andrews said. "He is a really good player and is playing well right now for us. The team also did a good job of finding him."
The Dons entered the half down 28-26 but outscored Cape Central in both the third and fourth quarter to secure the win.
"I felt like we got out and ran in the second half and were able to get some layups," Andrews said.
Chandler Wilson added 12 points for the Dons in the win while Tyler Collins finished with 10 on the night.
Clearwater 66, Ellington 59 The Tigers outscored Ellington 18-9 in the third quarter on the way to a road win Tuesday night.
"We hit some shots and got out a little bit moving the ball up and down the floor a little better," Clearwater coach Louis Bell said. "They struggled from the line in the third quarter and that helped us."
Ellington outscored the Tigers 26-23 in the final frame but it wasn't enough.
"We built the lead to 14 in the fourth quarter and we shot free throws well but didn't handle the ball real well," Bell said.
GIRLS
Campbell 50, Malden 44
Megan McCormick led three Lady Camels in double figures with 15 points as the Lady Camels survived a late surge from the Lady Wave.
"She is good at getting things started for us," Campbell coach Daren Ellsworth said of his point guard.
Campbell separated itself by outscoring the Lady Wave 15-5 in the third quarter after holding a slim 27-26 halftime lead.
"We really ran our man offense well and got backdoor layups," Ellsworth said.
Malden used its defensive pressure to close the gap in the fourth quarter after trailing by as many as 13 points in the third.
"They put more pressure on us in the fourth quarter but we were able to adjust," Ellsworth said.
Courtanie Vaughn scored 13 points for Campbell while Shana Bader added 12.
