Poplar Bluff's Kayla Huett and Jackie LeGrand finished first and second in the 50-meter freestyle Monday but the Lady Mules finished second to host St. Vincent 142-97.
"They just had more 'desire' at the end of races than we did," Poplar Bluff coach Beth Lewis said. "We also had about half the team sick either before, during or after the meet so illness was a huge downfall for us."
Saxony Lutheran finished third with 65 points.
Huett won the 50 freestyle in 35.55 seconds followed by LeGrand at 37.62. Huett was also second in the 100 freestyle at 1:21.54, just 3 seconds off the winning pace, while LeGrand was fourth.
Hannah Crites was second in the 200-individual medley at 3:19.07 while Jade Floyd was fourth. Crites also was second in the 100 breaststroke at 1:40.92, just 3.64 seconds off the winning pace, while Kristina Baker was fifth.
Lauren Decker was second in the 100 backstroke at 1:26.49 while Saxony Lutheran won by 1.37 seconds.
Alexa Hon was third in the 200 freestyle at 3:27.29 while Jordan Widman was fifth. Hon was also third in the 400 freestyle at 7:13.68 while Widman wa fifth.
Floyd (1:37.01) was third in the 100 butterfly in 1:37.01 while Anna Lampe followed.
Poplar Bluff's 200-meter medley relay was second in 2:40.16 as Decker, Crites, Floyd and Huett finished 2.13 seconds behind St. Vincent. Huett, Crites, Lampe and Decker were second in the 200-freestyle relay in 2:23.43 as St. Vincent won by half a second.
LeGrand, Widman, Hon and Ashlee Mattox were third in the 400-meter freestyle relay at 6:41.59.
Mattox and Decker were disqualified in their attempt to pick up Poplar Bluff's first diving points.
"It was quite entertaining," Lewis said.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Van Buren 49, Willow Springs 20
Britney Peterson scored 17 points while Marie Getts added 12 and Taylor Grant scored 10 Monday night for the Lady Dawgs.
Van Buren (9-7) led 17-3 after one quarter and held visiting Willow Springs to six field goals.
"We tried to keep them shooting from outside and played a tougher defense," Van Buren coach Don Mabry said.
