Trio of Mules wrestlers stay alive at state

COLUMBIA -- Paul Swesey got off to a good start in his quest for another allstate medal.

The Poplar Bluff senior advanced to the second round of the MSHSAA Class 3 championships with a pin Thursday in his 189-pound match. Swesey, who is making his fourth straight state appearance, finished sixth last season.

Kelton Thompson also won his opening match at 215 pounds while heavyweight Dylan Janes kept his season alive after a first-round loss.

Brandon Bounds, a 125-pound junior, and sophomore Zach Surque, who won the 112-pound district title, were knocked out on the first day at Mizzou Arena. Matches continue today with the finals set for Saturday. Swesey improved to 27-4 with a pin at 3:09 of Raytown's Johnny Thomas. He'll face St. Charles West's Steve Dopp (42-3), who won his match 12-4. Thompson beat Parkway North's Zach Hayes 6-5 and faces Webb City's Chase Philpot (37-3), who won by fall at 5:18.

The winners advances to tonight's semifinal.

Janes kept his season alive by pinning Kearney's Julian Marquez in 47 seconds after losing to Justin Britt of Lebanon by fall in 53 seconds. Janes (16-7) will face the loser of Holt's Andrew Hammond (34-6) and Ozark's Drake Holland (32-5) in the second round of the wrestbacks.

Janes needs to win two more matches to place in the top six.

Surque finish his season 36-12 with two losses in his first state appearance. The sophomore was pinned in 1:31 by Webb City's Patrick Grigsby and by 1:13 by Lee's Summit West's Shane Hagerman.

Bounds, who reached the state tournament last year, was not pinned Thursday, losing 19-2 to Holt's Tony James while Tyler Zimmerman of Lebanon beat Bounds 11-4.

Dexter's Mikey Henley advanced to the quarterfinals at 119 pounds in Class 2. Henley (30-6) beat Excelsior Springs Trevor Stevenson 12-10.

Brittney Waldner lost twice at 103 pounds, losing to Boonville's Trevor Ditto, 18-3, and getting pinned by Reeds Spring's Joe Godsey.
