JACKSON -- Poplar Bluff defended its title Monday at the Notre Dame Invitational beating the host by two strokes.
Trent Hillis tied for second to lead the Mules at Bent Creek Golf Course while Corey Poteet tied for eighth as Poplar Bluff edged Notre Dame 338-340.
Chance Holden of Dexter was the medalist at 4-over-76. The Bearcats finished sixth par at 366 in the 11-team field.
"They worked hard and never quit," Mules coach Billy Pyland said. "It was a tough day. We just need to practice harder."
Hillis shot a 79 tying the sophomore with Jackson's Brett Leimbach and Tanner Werner as the Indians finished five strokes behind the Mules.
Poteet shot an 84, including Poplar Bluff's lone birdie on the day. The senior hit out of the sand to within two feet of the cup on the par-5 fifth before making his put.
Cameron West shot an 87 in his first-ever tournament while Zack Stricker shot an 88 and senior Josh Rathbun finished at 94.
"Cameron had never played a tournament at any level," Pyland said. "Throw him in a tournament and he plays well. There weren't very many 80s either."
The Mules travel today to Sikeston.
BASEBALL
Malden 14, Advance 0
Jordan Gregory Cody Collins and Sean Merritt combined for a five-inning no-hitter for the Green Wave.
Casey Gray cleared the bases with a three-run double and Merritt added a grand slam in the third inning for the Green Wave. The middle of the Green Wave batting order combined to get four hits and score eight while Tim Gage and Gray produced at the bottom of the order.
"It was nice to see the bottom of the order swing the bat," Malden coach Tim Harmon said.
Gregory struck out six batters over three innings before giving way to the bullpen. Collins and Merritt each pitched an inning of relief.
"Gregory did a good job keeping the ball down," Harmon said.
Campbell 6, Senath 1
Cale Weeks hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning as Campbell won.
Weeks had two more RBIs in the game to push around five of the six Camel runs. Kyle Matthews held the Senath offense in check as he pitched six innings to earn the win. He gave up three hits and struck out six while walking just one.
SOFTBALL
Dexter 9, New Madrid 4
The Lady Bearcats exploded for nine runs in the fourth inning as they picked up a win in their season opener.
Amanda Dooley hit a double to the centerfield fence as part of the big inning and finished the game 2-for-3. The Lady Bearcats got their runs on only four hits and benefited from several New Madrid errors.
"It took us a while to figure out the pitcher's rhythm," Dexter coach Tammy Crowley said.
