Alex West's overtime goal Monday night completed another come-from-behind home victory for the Poplar Bluff Lady Mules.

West pounced on a cross in the 84th minute to beat Sikeston 2-1.

"We wanted to get numbers forward," Poplar Bluff coach Mark Papp said. "We're not playing for ties and we're not playing to get to penalties, we're trying to win."

In other Poplar Bluff events, Notre Dame beat the Mules 10-0 in baseball.

At Whiteley Park, the Lady Mules (3-2) fell behind in the fifth minute before tying the game on a free kick by Allie Thomas midway through the first half.

Poplar Bluff has scored the first goal only once this season but rallied Monday night as the Lady Mules did in their only other home game.

"I think we responded well to the goal against, we just need to come out with the same kind of intensity," Papp said.

Sikeston (2-4) hit the crossbar in the opening minutes and got a goal from Megan Underhill. The senior midfielder stole a clearing attempt by Poplar Bluff and got a high shot past keeper Meagan Stucker.

The Lady Mules answered 12 minutes later after Jackie LeGrand drew a foul. Thomas scored from about 30 yards in front of the net, over the Sikeston defense and past the outstretched arms of keeper Amber Minner.

"That was definitely a boost," Papp said. "We've been fortunate in our wins to have timely goals. Allie definitely changed the tide with that goal."

The teams were tied 1-1 for the final 62 minutes but both sides had plenty of chances to take the lead in regulation.

Sikeston had a corner in the 29th minute punched out while a header to the left post by Emily Eaves off a free kick was snatched out of the air by Stucker.

Thomas put Chelsea Garner in on a break in the closing minutes of the first half and the senior was able to draw out Sikeston's keeper but couldn't get off a shot on an empty net. Poplar Bluff ended the first half with a free kick from the right corner but Miranda Burroughs hit the near post.

The Lady Mules had the majority of attacks in the second half but couldn't score.

In overtime, Garner took a pass in the middle and sent a cross to the right side that seemed to miss its intended target. West ran on, pounding the ball into the back of the net from 12 yards out for the win.

"There's no questioning her work ethic," Papp said of West, who scored her first goal of the season. "It makes me proud to see her get that goal."

In the junior varsity game, Jenni Hubbard scored twice and Courtney Knuckles picked up her second shutout, 4-0. Burroughs and Julia Ward also scored for Poplar Bluff (2-1).

BASEBALL

The Mules had one bad inning and not much offense Monday, losing at Notre Dame 10-0.

The Bulldogs (3-4) scored all of their runs in the fourth inning while the Mules (2-2) managed just one hit -- a double by Dallas Berry.

Camron Pickard picked up the loss.

Notre Dame's Austin Greer hit a home run, while four Bulldogs finished 2-for-3.

The Mules are scheduled to host Neelyville today.
