TRCC baseball earns split with Jefferson

By DAR STAFF

HILLSBORO -- The Raiders baseball team pulled out an extra-inning win to salvage a split at Jefferson on Wednesday.

After dropping the opener 8-0, the Raiders regrouped and won the second game 8-6.

"I didn't say much after the first game," said Three Rivers coach Stacey Burkey. "It's just a great showing from our players as to what they're made of."

After Jefferson tied the game in the seventh inning and the teams headed to extra innings, the Raiders' bats came through.

Scott Hudgins led off with a single and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a passed ball. After another walk and a stolen base by Chad Wynn, Nick D'Amico drove Hudgins home with a single. Anthony Gower provided the final RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Trailing 5-0, the Raiders scored six runs in the fifth inning to take the lead, including four runs with two outs.

Scott Hudgins led off with a single and Gower added a 2-run single later in the inning. After the first two outs were recorded, Nathan Booker singled to left to drive in a pair of runs and Hudgins doubled to drive in the go-ahead run.

"We really showed a lot of poise and confidence in ourselves in that inning," Burkey said.

D'Amico went 2-for-4 in the second game while Hudgins was 4-for-4.

Ryne Millsap pitched 3 1/3 innings to pick up the win for the Raiders. He struck out three while only allowing one hit and one run in relief of starter Josh Jordan.

The Raiders fell behind early in the opener as Jefferson scored a pair of runs in the first inning, two in the second and their final five in the fourth.

All of the fourth-inning runs came with two outs.

Jefferson's Nick Becker did the most damage, coming up with a bases-loaded triple that Wynn barely missed on a diving attempt in left-center field.

"If he catches it, it's a big momentum swing our way," Burkey said.

In all, six batters came to the plate for Jefferson in the fourth.

The Raiders struggled against the off-speed pitches of the Jefferson staff, and couldn't find the gaps when they put the ball in play.

"Their pitcher threw 75 percent breaking pitches," Burkey said. "We hit some balls pretty good, we just didn't put our hits together."

Jefferson's Luke Schlechte hit a 2-run home run in the first inning to put the Raiders in an early hole.

D'Amico led the Raiders by going 2-for-3 at the plate.
