CARBONDALE -- The Sikeston girls soccer team beat Champaign, Ill., 3-0 Saturday morning during the Carbondale tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs got on the scoreboard quick when Abbi Keefer found Jordi Ferrell for a goal at the two minute mark.
"It was really nice to get in the scoring column early," said Sikeston head coach Derrick Long. "It really seemed give us a confidence boost."
Sikeston would ride their early momentum to a 1-0 lead at the half before scoring two more in the second.
The Keefer-Ferrell combination hooked up again at the 48-minute mark to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. Sikeston would then put on an insurance goal with 16 minutes left in the game when senior Megan Underhill found the back of the net on an assist from Ashley Angle.
Goalie Amber Minner recorded the shut out victory for the Bulldogs with nine saves.
"I was pretty pleased with the girls performances," said Long. "We've been having problems closing out games but I think the girls really ran well for both halves against a tough Champaign team."
In their second game Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs fell to the St. Vincent Indians 1-0 in a double overtime thriller.
"It was a tough game to lose considering it was against a district foe," said Long. "That and last year they ended our season in the district tournament by the same score."
Sarah Moll scored on an assist from Brooke Brown for the winning goal at the 94-minute mark. But despite the loss however, Long still felt like his team competed well in the tournament.
"I think we got a little confidence booster out of this tournament," said Long. "We went up and competed really well and aggressive against some very good teams."
Also on the plus side for the Lady Bulldogs, Ferrell was named to the all-tournament team. Sikeston (4-6) will be back in action Tuesday when they host the Cape Central Lady Tigers at 5 p.m.
