WEST PLAINS -- The Sikeston Lady Bulldogs traveled to West Plains over the weekend to compete in the Lady Zizzers Classic. In the end, the Lady Bulldogs (6-8) earned a third place finish, going 2-1 in the tournament.

In the first round, Sikeston edged out Valley View, Ark., 2-1. With nine minutes left in the game, senior Abbi Keefer scored the go-ahead goal to break a 1-1 tie.

Jordi Ferrell was credited for the assist.

"It was nice to get that first game of the tournament under our belt," said Sikeston head coach Derrick Long. "I thought we played very well against a strong Valley View team. We were just fortunate to get a break there at the end, and Abbi did a good job finishing it off."

In their next game, the Lady Bulldogs squared off against Notre Dame-St. Louis in semifinal action. But after a scoreless first half, the Lady Bulldogs found themselves unable to hold off the talented St. Louis squad in the second, losing 2-0.

"We knew coming into the game it was gonna be a tough match," said Long. "They got third in state last year and have most of their players back this year. I still thought we played well though, we just had a few breakdowns in the second half."

However, Sikeston would bounce back nicely in the third place game beating a familiar Moberly opponent 3-1.

"We were kind of eager to go up against Moberly," said Long. "We've faced them the last three years in the third place game of this tournament and last year we lost to them in double overtime.

"But overall I think we played really well, our defense was pretty solid and our forwards really seemed to start clicking on the offensive end."

The Lady Bulldogs wasted little time as Keefer would find the net again at the seven minute mark on an assist from Laura Atchison. Sikeston later would go up 2-0 before the half after a Ferrell goal at the 34 minute mark. Ashley Angle was credited for the assist.

Moberly managed to cut the deficit to one on a penalty kick from Lauren Walker but that would be as close as they would get. Another Ferrell goal assisted by Keefer would put the game out of reach with two minutes remaining.

Sikeston will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Perryville to take on the Lady Pirates at 4:30 p.m.
