CHARLESTON -- The 2008 Mississippi County Wood Bat Tournament capped off on Sunday night with the Notre Dame Bulldogs pulling off a rout of the host team Charleston Bluejays 11-1 in five innings.

"It was ugly," Charleston head coach Michael Minner said. "For three or four innings, we competed. I felt like on the mound we did a fair job. We didn't mix it up well enough. I thought we threw too many fast balls in fast ball counts and they were sitting on fast balls."

Both teams looked sharp in the first two innings only allowing two baserunners between them due to walks. The Bluejays got the first hit of the game in the top half of the third inning from Jared Smith. Smith eventually made it around to score Charleston's only run of the game on an overthrow from left field to make it a 1-0 game.

The Bulldogs came right back and exploded with six runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Mark Himmelberg started the rally with a single to left field which resulted in six straight runs from the Bulldogs on four hits.

The Bluejays stranded two runners in the top half of the fifth inning which ended up being their last appearance at the dish.

Notre Dame plated five more runs in the bottom of the fifth to apply the 10-run rule as Ryan Bass scored the final run to end the game in walk-off fashion.

"I thought we played exceptionally well," Notre Dame head coach Jeff Graviett said. "This is one of our better games defensively and swinging the bats. They did a good job in the first three innings, but once we got hot with the bats, we really put the bat on the ball and throw a couple errors in on their behalf and thats the difference in the game."

Notre Dame rattled off a total of 10 hits with six off them coming from the three, four and five hitters in the lineup. Dylan Drury, Austin Greer and Aaron Tomazewski each had two hits and two runs for the Bulldogs. Greer had two RBI, while Drury and Tomazewski knocked one in a piece.

Drury, who also started the game on the hill, got the win for the Bulldogs going all five innings and striking out 11 batters and only allowing one walk and three hits.

"He's really becoming our top pitcher," Graviett said. "He's really doing a great job. He throws three pitches for strikes and he's tough to beat. He had all of them working today and he's just been a force on the mound for us."

Two of the three Charleston hits were from Jared Smith. Colin Gilooly received the other hit.

Receiving the loss for the Bluejays was the starter James Miller. Miller allowed five earned runs on five hits and two walks. James Naile came in with some relief work in the fifth inning allowing four earned runs on five hits and two walks.

"He's one of those kids that pitches off of adrenaline," said Minner of his starter. "I thought he threw the ball well. We didn't make some plays behind him and some breaks didn't go our way. I thought he battled but I think he just ran out of gas today."

The Bluejays (8-5) will try and rebound with the aluminum bats as they will host the Delta Bobcats today at 4 p.m. Notre Dame (9-5) will host NMCC on Monday as well.
