FREDERICKTOWN -- Chelsea Garner scored twice as the Poplar Bluff Lady Mules beat Fredericktown 5-1.

Jackie LeGrand had a goal and an assist while Jenni Hubbard scored for the Lady Mules (4-4).

"Injuries continue to mount so tonight may feature some new players to varsity," Poplar Bluff coach Mark Papp said.

Fortunately for the Lady Mules, tonight's game against Kennett is a varsity-only match starting at 5:30.

In other Poplar Bluff events, the golf team finished tied for fifth in Springfield while the tennis team lost to Farmington 8-1.

At Fredericktown, Garner scored her sixth and seventh goals of the season as goalie Meagan Stucker held her fourth straight opponent to a single goal with three saves.

Poplar Bluff led 3-0 at halftime.

The Lady Mules ended a two-game losing streak in which they were shutout twice by scoring five goals for the third time this season. They are 4-0 when scoring two or more goals this season.

In the 35-minute junior varsity game, the Lady Mules won 4-0 with two goals each by Hubbard and Kelsey Olsen. Miranda Burroughs and Julia Ward each had an assists for the Lady Mules (3-2).

GOLF

Cameron West carded two birdies and led Poplar Bluff to a fifth-place tie Monday at the Springfield Invitational at Rivercut Golf Course.

West, a junior playing his first year on the golf team, fired a 5-over 77 to finish 11th. Trent Hillis shot a 79 that included two birdies and put the sophomore into the top 15.

Poplar Bluff finished tied with Glendale Blue at 321 while Glendale won the team title at 299. Kickapoo and Rockhurst tied for second at 312 followed by Carthage's 317.

Zack Stricker shot an 81 for the Mules, picking up birdies on Nos. 3 and 7, while Josh Rathbun birdied No. 16 and carded an 84. Corey Poteet shot an 88 with a birdie on 13.

West and Rathbun are the only two Mules not returning from a second-place finish at state last year to Glendale and Mules coach Billy Pyland has been impressed with how far they've come along.

"Both of them, to shoot those scores is pretty good on this course," he added.

Nick Sheppard of Glendale earned medalist honors with a 3-under 69.

TENNIS

Already leading late in his match with Farmington's Justin Arnold, Malay Bhatt broke serve to go up 7-5 before holding serve to win Monday for the Mules.

"They're fun to watch," Mules coach Charlie Harper said.

It was Poplar Bluff's only win in an 8-1 loss to the Knights.

Bhatt and doubles partner Chris Drury lost 8-5 in the topseeded match while Kyle West and Asim Choudhary lost at No. 2, 8-1. Anderson Gilberto and Navneet Hundal lost their doubles match 8-2.

In singles play, West lost 8-5 while Choudhary fell 8-4. Hundal and Gilberto each lost their matches 8-1 while Drury fell 8-2.

Mohammed Abbas and Logan Page each won their junior varsity matches for Poplar Bluff.
