ROUNDUP: Sixth-seeded Greenville advances

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

By ALEX ABATE ~ DAR Sports Writer

The Greenville Bears didn't pay attention to the seeds of the Class 2 District 3 tournament.

Behind ace Joey Morey, the No. 6 seed Bears scratched across two runs and beat No. 3 seed Alton on Monday at Raider Field, 2-0.

In other action, Clearwater beat East Carter, 11-1 and Neelyville beat Thayer, 11-1.

Greenville will face Twin Rivers while Clearwater will battle Neelyville at 2 p.m. today.

Morey went the whole way for the Bears and gave up three hits while striking out seven. He threw 97 pitches.

"That is what you ask out of your ace," Greenville coach Jason Hill said. "As a six seed, getting that first 'W,' it really takes a big load off you."

Greenville got its first run of the game in the first inning. DJ Robinson walked and stole second. He later scored on a twoout single by Robert Abernathy. Greenville got another run in the seventh on a clutch hit single by Kyle Montgomery.

"(Alton's Caleb Hollis) was really good on the mound today and kept our hitters off-balance," Hill said. "Two was just enough today and that is a tribute to our guy on the mound throwing a lot of strikes and getting a lot of outs."

Clearwater 11, East Carter 1

Chris Kirkpatrick pitched five innings and had 10 strikeouts as the Tigers moved past the Redbirds.

Kirkpatrick, the No. 3 pitcher for the Tigers allowed three hits and walked just two in the win.

"We really needed that today because that lets you have your No. 1 and No. 2 fresh," Clearwater coach Justin Dobbins said. "He is left-handed and his ball moves a little bit and people have trouble with him."

The Tigers scored at least one run in every inning, plating four in the second and three in the fifth.

"It wasn't the prettiest game in the world," Dobbins said. "But, we put the ball in play and they made quite a few errors but we got enough big hits and made plays when they put it in play."

Kirkpatrick added two RBIs on the day and Jake Hime came through as well as he drove in two in the win.

Neelyville 11, Thayer 1

The Tigers' offense took advantage of three Thayer errors in the first inning as they scored eight times and went on to beat the Bobcats.

Jordan Thomas pitched five innings for the Tigers and allowed four hits. He had two walks and struck out four as he allowed one earned run.

"(Thomas) got a little shaken up that first inning and then he settled down," Neelyville coach Jared Beaird said. "He started throwing a lot better and got some pretty good outs there."

The Tigers did a good job of taking what the Bobcats gave them, Beaird said.

"I think we were extremely patient today at the plate," Beaird said. "Alex Bolt in the eight hole, had probably 10-pitch at bats there both times and got the game winner there at the end, just extreme patience."
