ROUNDUP: Dexter rallies past Fredericktown

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- David Hessling hit a two-run triple to left in the fifth inning and Tyler Scott had the go-ahead hit in the sixth as Dexter rallied to beat Fredericktown 4-3 in the first round of the MSHSAA Class 3 District 1 tournament Monday.

Scott reached base on a squeeze bunt to drive in Hessling with the Bearcats' third run of the sixth to complete the rally.

"Tyler came up huge," Dexter coach Brian Becker said. "That squeeze play was basically the game-winner. All year we've had kids come up big in clutch situations."

Hessling's hit rolled just under the glove of the third baseman and continued down the line all the way into the corner, allowing him to round the bases. Becker said that hit was the spark that got his team's offense going.

"We were rolling after that," he said. "Our bats struggled at the start but then we turned it on."

Mason Noe got the win in relief of starter Eric Windham, beginning with a popup on his first pitch of the game and continuing until his final strikeout with the bases loaded in the seventh.

"Eric Windham had some good pop on his fastball," Becker said. "He was just missing his spots. Noe came in and got a popout and got us headed in the right direction."

Ellington 24, Summersville 0

Michael Brawley and Brandon Huffman combined for a 3-inning no-hitter as Ellington blanked Summersville 24-0 in the opening round of the MSHSAA Class 1 District 4 tournament.

The Whippets (7-5) benefited from a lack of control by the Summersville pitcher to get baserunners on, and then drove them in with key hits.

"We probably had 10 walks," Ellington coach Dan Hoffman said. "We tried to discipline our hitters."
