CHARLESTON -- It was a run-scoring marathon at Hillhouse Park on Thursday afternoon as the home team Charleston Bluejays steamrolled over the Hayti Indians 24-0 in five innings.
"I'm always glad about a win," Charleston head coach Michael Minner said. "We took advantage of a team that has played four games in four days. They're probably better than what they have shown today."
The Bluejays pounded out 18 hits on their way toward the victory while 14 of those were from the first two innings.
"We jumped on them early," Minner said. "I thought we swung the bats real well. We're starting to do some things that we've hoped we'd do all year."
In the first inning, three runs were scored by the Bluejays. Then, in the second, Charleston exploded with 16 runs on 11 hits. During the 16-run barrage, 13 of those runs were with two outs.
The substitutions started filtering in as the Bluejays batting order went around twice.
After going up by the score of 19-0, and mostly reserves on the field, Charleston added three more in the third inning and two more in the fourth to end the scoring.
The Jefferson College-bound Paul Johnson led all hitters with three hits, three RBI and three runs. Two of Johnson's hits were triples into center field.
Four other Bluejays had extrabase hits: Zach Rowland, Eric Rowland, Nick Johnson and Chase McClendon all connected for doubles in the second inning. Eric Rowland had three RBI while McClendon and Collin Gilooly each had two RBI.
Picking up his sixth win on the season, Jamie Barber pitched four innings allowing only five hits and sat down five Indian batters on strikes.
"He's been one of our tough- est pitchers we've probably ever had in the program," Minner said of Barber. "He doesn't throw the ball real hard but he throws it where he wants to. If we have a game to win, he's probably the kid that's earned the right to be put on the mound."
The Bluejays (13-5) will head to Cape Central on Monday for their next game as Minner knows it will be a battle for his club.
"We know we're going to play a tough team," said Minner about the Tigers. "We're just going to try and keep rolling. So, we'll just see what happens."
