FARMINGTON -- The Sikeston Lady Bulldogs wrapped up the 2008 season on the soccer field Tuesday night as they fell to the Notre Dame Lady Bulldogs 2-0.
Anna Wren scored the first goal for Notre Dame at the 27-minute mark on an assist from Jennifer Stevens, leaving the score 1-0 at the half.
At the 47-minute mark Katherine Blazner scored an unassisted goal to give the No. 1 seed a 2-0 lead and Sikeston couldn't manage a comeback.
"Of course it didn't end the way we wanted it to," said Sikeston head coach Derrick Long of the district semifinal game. "We didn't get our illusive first district championship. It was rough on our seniors and it will be tough to lose them.
"We played well tonight and we had opportunities to score," he added. "We just didn't put them in."
The 2008 season provided a 12-14 record and Long said that next season will be good year with a core of young, but experienced players.
"Next year, we'll be all right but we have six big holes to fill in the lineup," Long said. "We have a good freshman group coming up so we'll be prepared."
