SIKESTON -- Sikeston Post 114 picked up another victory on Tuesday evening as they defeated Mayfield (Ky.) Post 26 1-0 in a seven-inning pitchers duel.

Sikeston's Joey Williams picked up the victory, giving up no runs on five hits and five walks while striking out four.

"Joey threw one heck of a game," said Sikeston head coach Todd Baker following the victory. "He hadn't thrown a whole lot in a while but he gave us something that is very important right now and that's a lot of innings. He ate up a lot of innings. We played good defense behind him, too.

"We didn't hit the ball all that well throughout the lineup but we did what we had to do," he added. "We took advantage of some miscues and we were fortunate to beat a good team. Neither team hit the ball that well and that just goes to show how well of a game was pitched on both sides."

Post 114 picked up the lone run of the game in the first inning. Josh Pierce reached on an error by the third baseman, was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Seth Baker and, following two walks, he scored on a fielder's choice hit to the shortstop by David Hessling. The run would be all that Sikeston would need to hold on for the victory as the defense picked up the rest of the slack from there.

"I couldn't be more pleased with this game," said Baker. "Especially with how well we played defense and turned a couple of good double plays. We played good defense behind Joey and that s what we stress here, is to play good defense."

The loss was handed to Mayfield's Joe Mike, who threw six solid innings, giving up no earned runs, one hit and had three walks and four strikeouts. He was also 2-for-3 at the plate with two singles.

Up next for Post 114 is the Charleston Wood Bat Tournament, which is scheduled to begin Friday at Hillhouse Park in Charleston. Sikeston is set to play the Charleston Fighting Squirrels Senior Babe Ruth team at 7:30 p.m.
