SIKESTON -- The FC Sikeston club soccer program will be having open tryouts this weekend at the Sikeston Sports Complex for all kids interested in participating in their fall season.

Originating with two teams this past Spring, FC Sikeston played against some of the best competition around as they took on squads all the way from St. Louis to Memphis.

"Last season we competed in a couple of upper level tournaments in St. Louis," FC Sikeston head coach Eric Long said. "There were a lot of great teams there so we pretty much just tried to get our feet wet.

"But overall I thought we competed really well and we actually won a few games."

However, Long quickly stated that playing against the bigger city squads will only help to improve the kids soccer skills.

"I believe that when you play at a club level you are playing against the best around," said Long. "And when you play against better teams you get better and gain more experience.

"So if there are some players out there that want to get a better game they should definitely give club soccer a try."

The first try out will be Saturday from 9-11 a.m. for all boys and girls ages 8-13. And then the second try out date will be Monday from 6-8 p.m.

Long added that they were hoping to add anywhere from four to six new teams to the fall club season. With around 10-13 kids on each depending on age for both the girls and boys.

"We would love to have as many teams as possible for all ages," said Long. "It ultimately just depends on how many kids come out and want to play."

FC Sikeston will compete in about one tournament a month and will not conflict with the Sikeston youth soccer league schedules.

"We will be competing in Memphis, St. Louis and Mayfield, Ky.," said Long. "And the only cost for the league outside of uniforms will be for traveling and hotel accommodations.

But Long added that they planned on doing fundraisers to help out with expenses. And that if any kids are thinking about coming to try out they'd love to have them.
