SIKESTON -- Even though Sikeston Post 114 outhit Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons Post 63, Post 114 could not find a way to put more than one run across as it fell 4-1 in Sr. Legion play.

"We hit the ball, but we didn't get on base very often," assissant coach Jeff Limbaugh said. "We had our chances and I think we can hit the ball better than that."

Sikeston outhit Post 63 6-5 in Wednesday's game, but three hits in the top of the sixth inning for Cape led to three runs and ultimately the difference.

As Cape was already holding a 1-0 lead after a run in the first inning, Sikeston starter Josh Stevens produced a ground out and a pop out to begin the sixth inning. Cape's Collin Crane worked a walk out of Stevens to begin the sixth inning rally after that.

Steven Houseman followed the walk with a double to left field to advance Crane to third base. The next batter, Brady James, brought both Houseman and Crane home with a single to left to make it a 3-0 game.

"We had some big two out hits," Post 63 head coach Dave Meyr said. "Some of the guys really came through. That's what it takes to win some of these ball games."

Blake Smith followed up with a single to right field that would eventually make it a 4-0 game because of an overthrow that ended up out of play. The overthrow scored James from third and allowed Smith to advance to second.

"When they scored three runs in the sixth, we had already gotten the first two outs," Limbaugh said. "Then we walked a couple and in a tight game, the little things like that will come back to haunt you and it did."

Sikeston's lone run came immediately following Cape's rally in the bottom of the sixth inning. Post 114's run was also scored with two outs. After a line out to left field and a fly out to right, Josh Stevens hit his second double of the day to left field. A single by Garrett Limbaugh to left field scored Stevens for the only RBI.

"We've faced Garrett Stevens before," Limbaugh said about Cape's starter on the mound. "It just didn't happen tonight. Garrett did his job and kept us off balance."

Garrett Stevens went all seven innings giving up one run on six hits and struck out one.

"Garrett (Stevens) was on tonight," Meyr said. "He looked real comfortable and relaxed out there. He got ahead in counts and pitched a good game."

Sikeston's starter on the hill also went all seven but ended up taking the loss. Josh Stevens allowed four runs on five hits. He also walked five and struck out two.

"I thought Josh (Stevens) threw a good game," Limbaugh said. "He's thrown back-to-back good games for us. He's learned that he doesn't have to strike everybody out and has turned into a pretty good pitcher."

Stevens also was Sikeston's leading hitter with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Both of his hits were doubles to left field.

Blair Bohannon was also 2-for-3, while Limbaugh went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Brandon Stoker was 1-for-3 at the dish.

Post 63's Blake Smith was the only multiple hitter with two hits, while James went 1-for-3 with two RBI, Garrett Stevens went 1-for-3 with a double, Houseman also was 1-for-3 and Crane was 0-for-2 but added an RBI to his stats with a sacrifice fly.

Sikeston will try and get back on the winning side of things today at 5:30 p.m. when they host Farmington.
