DEXTER -- Dexter fell behind early to the Charleston Squirrels in Senior Babe Ruth action at Dexter on Tuesday, but pounded out 13 hits towards their way to a victory, 11-6 in seven innings.

"For whatever reason, we just swung the bats well tonight," Dexter head coach Brian Becker said. "I'm proud of my kids. This was the last game of the summer for us and I was glad to see us come out with a win. We missed a couple of defensive plays that we should have made. But, overall, I thought we hit the ball well all night and Mason (Noe) and Cody (Stauss) both did a good job on the mound for us."

Noe started the game on the mound for Dexter but gave up four runs on three hits in the first inning to the Squirrels. But in the bottom half of the first, Dexter cut the lead in half and eventually tied it at four runs apiece with two more runs in the second inning.

Charleston regained the lead in the fourth inning with a run scored and then lost it in the bottom half when Dexter put two more runs on the board to make it a 6-5 game.

The Squirrels were able to tie the game in the fifth inning when Blake Gaddis scored on an error to make that Charleston's final run of the game.

Dexter scored two more runs in the sixth to make it a two-run game and added a little extra cushion in the sixth inning with three runs to finish off the Squirrels.

"It was ugly," Squirrels head coach Michael Minner said. "We didn't do baseball things tonight. We butchered situations all night long and against a good ballclub you can't do that."

Charleston at times strung a few hits together to try and gain momentum, but they either failed to capitalize with a hit when it mattered the most or ran into an out at the plate.

"We kind of ran ourselves out of a few innings," said Minner. "I know we had an inning when we had runners on second and third and we only got one run and that hurts. You get your guys in scoring position you have to put the ball in play."

Dexter's Josh Sifford had no problems putting the ball in play as he went 4-for-5 with a triple and an RBI. He also scored two runs in the game. Landon Hall was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs, Noe went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Brandon Stoker went 2-for-4.

Minner also said that walks and defense were two big factors for the loss.

"We walked too many," Minner said. "We walked way too many hitters and just didn't play good enough defense. Unfortunately, we didn't give ourselves a chance to win tonight. That's the way it falls sometimes."

Tyler Whybark got the start for the Squirrels, which has usually been a good thing lately in his last couple of starts, but Minner said that lack of command was the issue with Whybark tonight.

"He struggled," Minner said about his starter. "He just didn't have command of his pitches. He threw the ball well but when he was successful is when he got ahead and was able to throw his curveball. He did a good job at times, but when you get behind and have to throw to good hitters and you throw a fastball in fastball counts, good hitters are going to hit it and that's what they did tonight."

Whybark received the loss in his 5 1/3 innings of work, giving up nine runs on 13 hits and three walks. He also struck out seven Dexter batters.

Stauss picked up the win for Dexter in two innings of work. He gave no runs on no hits and struck out four.

"We probably struck out a little too much tonight," Minner said. "We just came out tonight and kind of looked dead. So, hopefully we'll bounce back tomorrow. We're getting close to playoff time now. So, we're still trying to find nine."

Jarryd Smith led the Squirrels with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, while Zach Rowland went 2-for-4.

The Squirrels will be back in local action on Wednesday when they take a trip to Paducah, Ky.
