DONIPHAN -- Doniphan scored a run in four different innings as the Donettes moved past Twin Rivers 4-3 Tuesday afternoon.

"I thought our kids were really focused," Doniphan coach Brad Phillips said. "In the past, Twin Rivers has really had Doniphan's number and we were fortunate enough to hang in there and battle and get the win."

Twin Rivers scored in the top of the first and Doniphan answered with a run of its own in their half.

"That was really huge," Phillips said. "We got the bat on the ball there a few times and got some players into scoring position and it gave us some confidence."

Mary Beth Cosgrove got the win for the Donettes on the mound as she fanned six.

"She has stepped up this year already," Phillips said. "She is really throwing strikes. When she gets down, she comes back and finds a way to get back into it."

The Donettes (3-0) had five hits in the game and took advantage of five errors against Twin Rivers ace Carlee Vancil, who struck out 10.

"Carlee got out of messes when she had to but we had four balls go to the fence," Twin Rivers coach Rob Brown said. "If you give them that many outs, a good team is going to beat you."

Aggressive baserunning was a key in such a close game, Phillips said.

"There was a couple of times that we stole and they overthrew and got us some runs," Phillips said. "Anything against (Vancil) is crucial because she's not going to give up a lot of runs."

The Lady Royals have two seniors on the squad but no juniors and the rest are underclassmen.

"We've got some girls that haven't played much and are still young," Brown said.

East Carter 18, Van Buren 6: Freshman Molly Freeze had a solid all-around game for the Lady Redbirds (2-2). Freeze went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and three RBI. She also pitched three innings on the rubber, striking out four Lady Bulldogs.

Seniors Bethany LeGrand, Tiffany Baker and Laura Nance each had two RBIs for East Carter.

Fowler was 2-for-3 for Van Buren with a run scored.

Naylor 17, Clearwater 1: For Clearwater (0-3), Kara Miller knocked in the only run of the game for the Lady Tigers with a double. Paige Radford was 1-for-1 with a stolen base.

BASEBALL

Clearwater 10, Naylor 0: The Tigers' offense hammered out eight hits and took advantage of six Naylor errors in their first OFC win.

"That is important getting the first conference win," Clearwater coach Joe McCallister said. "You never like to play catch-up."

Trey Hill, Jordan Devenport and Ronnie Ray each had RBIs in the win while Logan Morris chipped in with three hits.

"Even though we scored 10, we still didn't hit the ball as good as we should be hitting the ball right now," McCallister said. "They had some errors that allowed is to score some runs."

Chris Kirkpatrick went the whole way for the Tigers as he allowed just four hits and had four strikeouts.

"He is keeping us in the game with things he is doing," McCallister said. "He is not walking people and pitching to contact and letting the defense take care of it."

Four different Eagles had a hit in the loss.

Senath 7, Campbell 4: The Camels couldn't overcome issuing seven walks as they lost Tuesday.

Dylan Lynn led the Camels with three hits and an RBI while Joe Campbell and Zack Jackson each added two hits.

Matt Fouts had two hits and three RBIs for Senath backing Heath Horvath who threw five innings in the win.

Twin Rivers 11, Doniphan 6: The Royals erupted for 11 runs on eight hits in a win Tuesday.

Alan Shearer led the Royals with three RBIs while Cole McBroom added two of his own.

John Stevenson got the win for the Royals as he threw five innings and had seven strikeouts.

"We played a solid game," Twin Rivers coach Denver Stuckey said. "We got another good outing from Johnny and played good defense behind him."

Stevenson gave up his only two runs in the sixth inning.

"I wanted to extend him a little bit," Stuckey said. "He did real well. He is a little disappointed in himself that he gave up two runs but I was pretty pleased."

Adam Tajeda led the Dons with three RBIs on two hits in the loss while Travis Moe and Daniel Newman each added an RBI.

Ellington 18, Van Buren 9: Mike Brawley led Ellington over Van Buren as he had five RBIs on three hits.

Brad Baysinger added three RBIs for the Whippets.

"Our bats have been alive all fall," Ellington coach Mike Smith said. "One thing we haven't had to worry about is putting runs on the board."

Even though Ellington put up double-digit runs, it did have six errors.

"A lot of them were small errors like throwing errors," Smith said. "It is early as far as the defense goes."

VOLLEYBALL

Eminence 2, Clearwater 0 (25-9 25-15)" Although the game was originally scheduled for at Clearwater, some electrical problems caused the game to be moved.

"We did a few things right, we just didn't put the down," Clearwater head coach Rae Jean Fuchs said.

Tiffany Tucker had three aces on the night and passed well. Fuchs noted that Emily Miller had a a great passing game as well for the Lady Tigers.

"We saw what we needed to work on," Fuchs added.

Bernie 2, Sikeston 0 (25-11, 25-15): Sophomore Lyndsey Stone played in one game and led the Lady Mules with four kills. Kristin Eaves led the team with eight blocks, four of the solo variety.

"The varsity played well except for our hitting," Bernie coach Jeff Rodgers said. "Lyndsey Stone came in the second set and gave us a lift with four kills."

Sami Palmer had 11 digs and Eaves was right behind her with nine. The Lady Mules are now 1-0 but still have room for improvement.

"We'll have to hit better than that if we want to beat the good team," Rodgers said. "I'm confident we will."

TENNIS

Farmington 5, Poplar Bluff 4: The Lady Mules tennis team suffered their second straight loss of the season as Farmington edged them at home Tuesday afternoon.

The match of the day occurred in the No.4-seed match between Poplar Bluff's Kelsey Olsen and Farmington's Heather Lewis. Despite being down 1-4, Olsen rallied back to grab the win in the tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-5).

The Mules (1-2) found success in their doubles play as Olsen and Jenni Hubbard as well as Rachael Brodell and Emily Gilmore each took two of three from Farmington, respectively.

"(The) varsity fought hard, but came up one game short," Mules head coach Michelle Massey said.

The junior varsity squad dominated Farmington, winning 19-1. No. 1 singles Addie Layne defeated Kayla Edgar, 6-4.
