DELTA -- Timely hitting and solid pitching earned the Poplar Bluff softball team its first win of the season Saturday afternoon, a 3-2 eight-inning victory over Delta.
Haley Foust led the eighth inning off with a double and then stole third. With two down, she took advantage of a passed ball and gave the Lady Mules the go-ahead run.
"Foust was huge for us today," Poplar Bluff coach Dustin Benson said. "She had two doubles and a game-winning run. She was all the offense we got."
Brandy Perry pitched all eight inning for the Lady Mules as she allowed just one earned run and struck out seven.
"Perry pitched real well," Benson said. "She had her changeup going great. She really had (her game) going today."
The Lady Mules took their initial lead in the sixth inning with two runs. Alex West started the frame off with a single and Foust hit a double. Moore followed with and RBI to tie the game at one and later scored on a Ashlee Mattox groundout.
It was the first win of the season for the Lady Mules, who lost their season opener Friday to Sikeston, 6-2.
The Lady Mules had their two runs on five hits with RBIs from Kelly Kelm and Megean Stucker.
Sarah Hopson kept the Lady Mules off-balance as she pitched seven innings and had one strikeout while allowing just one walk. Perry pitched for the Lady Mules and allowed six runs, three of them earned.
The Lady Mules won the JV game over Delta, 14-5. Cassandra Darnell had four RBIs to lead the Lady Mules while Rebekah Watkins added two RBIs in addition to getting the win on the mound.
BASEBALL
Twin Rivers 10, South Pemiscot 9: Chris Morse scored the winning run in the seventh on a hit by Colby Huggins on Friday.
The Royals got out to a 5-1 lead but couldn't hold it. Jonathan Stevenson pitched 3 2/3 innings and earned the win with five strikeouts and no runs allowed.
"It has been amazing watching him pitch the last couple games," Twin Rivers coach Denver Stuckey said. "He hasn't had much pitching experience but he is our best pitcher right now."
Cole McBroom had two hits for the Royals while Huggins had two RBIs in the win.
"We are not necesarily racking up the hits but our on-base percentage is up around .500," Stuckey said. "That is the name of the game, getting on base."
Campbell 16, Delta C-7 3: The Camels scored 11 runs in the sixth inning to move past Delta.
Zack Jackson had six RBIs on the game and Kyle Matthews added four on four hits. Five other Camels had RBIs in the win.
Matthews got the win on the mound for the Camels as he threw five innings and gave up just two earned runs. Dylan Lynn pitched the final inning of the win.
