FARMINGTON -- Ashlee Mattox scored once and drove in a pair of runs Monday to help the Poplar Bluff softball team beat Farmington 5-4.

The Lady Mules (7-6) held on to win for the fifth time in their last six games.

Poplar Bluff led by five before Farmington scored four in the sixth inning.

"Every game this year we play perfect softball except for one inning," Lady Mules coach Dustin Benson said. "It's been four runs in one inning. … I don't know how to get rid of that."

In other games involving Poplar Bluff teams, the Mules beat Kennett 2-0 in soccer and in tennis, the Lady Mules won at Sikeston 8-1.

At Farmington, Brandy Perry struck out six and walked none for Poplar Bluff in allowing no earned runs. The Lady Mules committed two errors in the four-run sixth.

Poplar Bluff scored first in the second inning when Mattox led off with a single to the right-field gap and moved to second on a passed ball. Meagan Stucker followed with an RBI single to the same gap to score Mattox.

In the third, Kelly Kelm led off with a line drive that was knocked down by the third basemen but still managed to reach base. Breanna Moore followed with a single to put runners at the corners and Alex West reached with a hard-hit ball to the left side that scored Kelm. Mattox doubled in Moore and Chelsea Coleman's sacrifice fly to right field later scored West for a 4-0 lead.

In the fifth, Moore led off with a single, stole second and reached third on a passed ball before scoring on a groundout by Mattox.

"We're coming around and hope to build on this," Benson said.

The Lady Mules (7-6) host their first game at Bacon Park today.

TENNIS: Poplar Bluff swept the season series with Sikeston with an 8-1 road win Monday.

"The girls played really good," Lady Mules coach Michelle Massey said. "The wind was something they had to figure out."

Poplar Bluff's No. 2 doubles team of Jenni Hubbard and Kelsey Olsen improved to 5-1 this season with an 8-1 victory.

Rachael Brodell and Emily Gilmore improved to 4-1 with their 8-1 win at No. 3 on Monday.

Jessica Gray and Allie Poteet won their top-seeded doubles match 8-4.

In singles play, Gray lost 8-5 against Sikeston's Jacarra Lampkin after winning the first meeting last Wednesday.

"Jessica fought hard in her match, just came up short," Massey said. "She hustled."

In the second-seeded match, Hubbard won 8-5 while Poteet and Olsen both won their matches 8-1.

Brodell and Gilmore were also winners by the same score, 8-1, as the Lady Mules improved to 3-4 in match play.
