FREDERICKTOWN -- The Poplar Bluff Mules soccer team grabbed its second win of season with a 3-1 victory Thursday night at Fredericktown.

Dallas Berry scored his first goal of the season on a header off an assist by Josh Thompson.

The Mules took a 2-0 lead into half after Fredericktown scored on its own goal later in the first half.

"In the first 10 minutes of the game, we applied good pressure and sent lots of balls in the box for scoring chances," Mules head coach Derek Reasons said.

In other games involving Poplar Bluff, the volleyball team swept Bloomfield 25-21, 25-15, the tennis team lost 5-4 to Charleston and the softball Lady Mules won 13-5 at Scott City.

At Fredericktown, the Blackcats (0-4) responded in the second half after a defensive breakdown by the Mules caused a goal for the Blackcats' Ryley Roberts.

Thompson responded shortly after as he placed a free kick at the top of the penalty area past the goalkeeper.

"It was a great shot," Reasons said. "Josh really can take advantage of those opportunities for us."

Jay Raulston got the win in net with six saves.

"I was proud that the guys found a way to get a victory," Reasons added. "That tells a lot about a team's character."

The Mules (2-4) play their first home game against Kennett at Whiteley Park in a varsity-only game starting at 4 p.m. Monday.

TENNIS: Poplar Bluff's Jessica Gray spent a long time on the court Thursday afternoon, but was able to split her singles and doubles matches on the day.

Gray beat Jordan Duenne, 8-6, to take her top-seeded singles match. In her doubles match with teammate Allie Poteet, Gray went to a tiebreaker against Jordan Duenne and Chelsea Stalling, but lost 9-7.

"Jessica Gray and Allie Poteet had an hour and half match," Mules head coach Michelle Massey said.

Massey thought that her team has some improvements to make after playing their sixth match of the season.

"Overall, we need to work on being more aggressive in singles," Massey said.

Winning matches for Poplar Bluff on the day were Gray, Kelsey Olsen, Rachel Brodell and the doubles team of Jenni Hubbard and Kelsey Olsen.

SOFTBALL: The Lady Mules scored 10 runs in first inning to win at Scott City.

"Everybody came out hitting the ball hard," Lady Mules coach Dustin Benson said.

Breanna Moore was 3-for-5 with a triple, a double and three RBIs while Kelly Kelm was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs.

Alex West had two hits and Ashlee Mattox was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Brandy Perry gave up five runs on four hits and three walks. She also had a hit and drove in three runs.

Poplar Bluff (3-5) score three more in the sixth after Scott City scored four times in the fifth.
