Fund-raiser highlights unbeaten 1990 Poplar Bluff team

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

By DAR Staff

The time and location for the third annual Gridiron Grill, sponsored by the Claudia Foundation, has been changed due to a scheduling conflict.

The dinner, which will honor the 1990 undefeated Mules football team, now will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in a tent at the south end of Fred Morrow Stadium.

Tickets prices have been reduced to $10 per person to help make up for the last-minute change in location.

The 1990 Mules were conference champs; that title, and an undefeated season, earned the team induction into the Poplar Bluff Sports Hall of Fame.

Shane Kearbey was quarterback of the team. Jim Brown was a coach.

Now, Kearbey is the new Mules head coach; Brown is the new athletic director.

They'll revisit some of those 1990 memories at the Sept. 25 dinner and also will honor Bill Caputo, immediate past athletic director of Poplar Bluff High School. Members of this year's Mules football team will be special guests at the fundraising event, which kicks off 2008 Football Homecoming weekend activities. The general public is welcome and organizers urge all football alumni of any season to attend and show support for the Mules.

Brown will act as master of ceremonies. There also will be a silent auction of sports-related items.

Tickets are available at Simmons Tire, Jim Brown's office at PBHS, the Bloodworth House and the offices of Rowland Family Dentistry, at 1301 East Maud St.

Proceeds from the dinner go toward Claudia Foundation scholarships and the Charlie Classics program, which rewards high school students for completing a prescribed, teacher-approved reading program.
