ELLSINORE -- East Carter got three runs in the second inning and held on to beat Neelyville 3-1 on Friday after noon.
Laura Nance had a triple and a run scored in the win while Courtney Newman pitched seven innings and gave up just three hits for the Lady Redbirds (7-6) .
"She did real well on the mound and felt good," East Carter coach Angie Bowman said.
The defense behind Newman was solid.
"We held them defensively really well," Bowman said "With Courtney on the mound they didn't get too many hits and when they did get them, we shut them down."
Hannah McDaniel pitched for the Lady Tigers and gave up three runs and struck out six.
"McDaniel did a fantastic job only giving up two hits , but there was no support with the defense which had six errors," Neelyville coach Liz Ponder said. "It is virtually impossible to win a game with your defense not supporting your pitcher."
