KENNETT -- The Poplar Bluff soccer team was shorthanded Monday night against the Kennett Indians, but nearly came away with one. The Indians broke a 2-2 tie with two minutes to go as Blake Willbanks scored to lift Kennett to the win, 3-2.
Poplar Bluff coach Derek Reasons was missing four key players for the game. Josh Thompson and Josh Townsend each received two yellow cards in the previous game against Perryville last week which results in each player sitting out Monday night's game. Reasons was also missing goalkeeper Jay Raulston and Logan Plunkett for violating team rules.
The Mules trailed 2-0 in the first half, but bounced back in the second to tie it up.
Within 15 minutes in the middle of the half, Poplar Bluff got goals from Nate Legrand on a free kick and then Legrand set up a Dustin Calvert goal.
"I was satisfied with how the team played in the second half," Reasons said. "But I was pretty disappointed with how they played in the first half."
Billy Powell and Drew Ernest split duties in goal with Raulston out. They combined on four saves on the night. The Mules outshot Kennett, 11-7.
Poplar Bluff returns to action tonight at home against Fredericktown.
