Puxico rolls, Lady Bears fall in district volleyball

By ALEX ABATE ~ DAR Sports Writer

BLOOMFIELD -- Puxico took charge early against Charleston and didn't let up as they won in two games Monday afternoon in the first round of the MSHSAA Class 2 District 2 tournament in Bloomfield, 25-9, 25-7.

The Lady Indians will now face Bloomfield in the semifinals today at 5:30 p.m.

Even in the win, Puxico coach Karen Hazel wasn't overly ecstatic with how her team performed.

"We won but I was not pleased with the way they played," Hazel said. "Too many balls hit the floor that shouldn't have and we were laid back."

Puxico had control virtually all of the opening game as Charleston got just two points that weren't of the rally variety.

After winning the first game, Puxico didn't let off the gas pedal. It jumped out to a 5-0 lead and with a 12-4 lead, Sara Holloway had four straight aces to help Puxico get off to a 20-4 lead before winning the match.

"She had some really good serves," Hazel said. "Sara is my senior and she has been a leader for me for four years and she has been a captain for four years and she is the glue that keeps them together."

Cohesiveness for the Lady Indians has been a point of emphasis.

"I am proud of all my girls," Hazel said. "I can't just pick out one, they work as a team and that is what counts."

The Lady Indians know they need to be ready for the Lady Wildcats.

"It is down to the wire," Hazel said. "We want to win and they want to win just as badly as we do to go on and play for the championship."

Woodland 2, Greenville 0 (25-11, 25-12): Fifth-seed Greenville jumped out to an early 6-4 lead on fourth-seed Woodland but it was shortlived.

Woodland evened the score and took the lead thanks to solid serving from Becky Brannon who had three aces as the Lady Cardinals took a 9-6 lead. Greenville scored just five points the rest of the first game in the loss.

"Volleyball is a game of runs and we couldn't put anything together," Greenville coach Brent Huff said.

Greenville took a lead again in the second game but couldn't hold it. The Lady Bears had a 5-3 lead and were tied at seven but a 12-0 Lady Cardinal run put them up 19-7 on their way to ending Greenville's season.

"About four games before the season was over, we were playing really well," Huff said. "The last two-three games, we came out and weren't doing the things we needed to do and we hoped to turn that around tonight but obviously didn't."
