MALDEN -- After the first day of action in MSHSAA Class 2 District 1 tournament, the Twin Rivers Lady Royals came out the highest seed after numerous upsets.
The third-seeded Lady Royals will take on the fifth-seeded Caruthersville in tonight's championship after the Tigers upset two teams Monday.
Twin Rivers won its first-round game against sixth-seeded Malden, 25-20, 25-18.
Tayler McLane had a team-high 12 assists on the game while Stephanie Jennings went 7-for-7 serving.
The Lady Royals then beat secondseeded Hayti in the semifinals in a tough match, 25-21, 28-30, 25-23.
Danielle Cole went 18-for-20 serving with four aces. Torey Davis had 10 kills, Tabitha Hackle had three blocks and Cassie Parks had 18 digs.
"The environment of the gym was down at the start of the night," Lady Royals coach Kelly Null said. "Against Hayti, we picked it back up and we had really high energy. We probably should of finished it in two games."
The surprise of the district though has to be Caruthersville who knocked out fourthseeded Portageville in the first round and then top-seed Senath in the semifinals.
"According to their coach, they've been counted out this year because they haven't played in any tournaments," Null added. "They've got a lot of good athletes and our goal is to come out with high energy and overwhelm them."
The Lady Royals look clinch their first district title in school history tonight at 6 p.m. at Malden.
Class 1 District 2
The Bernie Lady Mules advanced to the finals of the MSHSAA Class 1 District 2 tournament by beating Risco and Richland.
The Lady Mules will now face Bell City in the championship tonight at 6:00.
"These seniors worked for the last six years for this chance," Bernie coach Jeff Rodgers said. "All the camps, club ball seasons and practices all have led to this moment, I hope they really want it bad."
After beating Risco 25-13, 25-17, the Lady Mules beat Richland 25-15, 25-11. Krista Armbruster led Bernie with seven kills and Kristin Eaves had four. Eaves had seven blocks to pace the Lady Mules.
"I thought Krista Armbruster hit the ball well tonight with 11 kills and 0 errors," Rodgers said. "Olivia Snider did a nice job digging some of Tiffany Brown's attacks."
In the first match against Risco, Eaves led Bernie with 10 kills and seven blocks.
"We didn't play badly in most areas, but missed too many serves," Rodgers said. "Our hitters did a pretty good job with 25 kills and only five errors."
