Raiders get rematch with Logan right away

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

By ALEX ABATE ~ DAR Sports Writer

The Raiders are a perfect 2-0 at home this season and hope to keep that going tonight.

Three Rivers hosts John A. Logan at the Bess Activity Center at 7 p.m., the same team that beat the Raiders 72-67 back on Nov 4.

"The last two times we played them, they have beat us," Raiders coach Gene Bess said. "We have a good feel for what they are going to do but they are pretty good."

In the loss earlier in the season, Logan had a balanced offense as three players scored in double figures.

"They don't go much for 3-pointers, they are real sound offensively," Bess said. "They try to work it and beat you off the dribble and curl and get inside."

Jeremy Marrs saw his first action of the season in Saturday's win over Lewis & Clark and contributed with two rebounds in just more than eight minutes of playing time. The main post threat for the Raiders has been Aloysius Henry while Marrs has been recovering from an ankle injury.

"He is just a long way from being full speed, I think he is getting better," Bess said of Marrs. "The bottom line is, he has to get some good practices under his belt to get better."

ROGERS ALL-AMERICAN

Former Doniphan basketball standout Matt Rogers was recently named a NABC Division II preseason All-American for his upcoming season at Southwest Baptist University.

Last season, Rogers set the MIAA record for blocked shots with 217 and averaged 14.9 points and 7.8 rebounds.

The Bearcats are 1-0 this season after winning a close game against Division 1 Utah, 80-79. Rogers had 12 points and five rebounds along with the team's only block.

ALFORD ALL-MVC

Former Mule Justin Alford's Missouri State Bears fell 1-0 over the weekend to Creighton in the MVC Championship game. The Bears finish their season with a record of 7-10-5 and 3-1-1 in the conference.

Alford was one of two Bears named to the All-MVC first team. Alford was an All-MVC freshman in 2005 but was hampered through his sophomore and junior seasons by injury. During this season, Alford recorded 12 shots and a goal in conference play, all of those being games he started. Alford also had two goals in the Bears conference tournament win over Eastern Illinois.

LEGRAND ALL-HAAC

Former Lady Mule and Culver-Stockton freshman Jackie LeGrand was recently named to the HAAC All-Conference third team for her performance this season.

LeGrand led the Lady Wildcats (1-17) with seven goals and an assist this season. She led the team in points with 15 points and 24 shots, 15 of those coming on goal.
