BCT Game 2: Bulldogs catch second wind

Greenville's Daniel McCarthy, bottom, and Portageville's Dometric Treadwell dive after a loose ball Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, during the first round of the Bloomfield Christmas Tournament.

BLOOMFIELD -- Even though No.15 seed Greenville Bears kept it tight in the first quarter, the Portageville Bulldogs proved to be too much Friday afternoon at the Bloomfield Christmas Tournament as Portageville outscored Greenville 24-3 in the second quarter en route to a 59-26 win.

Greenvillle looked like a scrappy group early as they defended well and kept it close at 10-6 after one quarter. Bears senior Nick Wren gave his team some momentum by hitting a 2-pointer with 2 seconds left.

But rebounding proved to be the issue for the Bears as Portageville cleaned up the offensive glass during a 21-1 run that started the second quarter.

Portageville's Byron Wright scored eight of the Bulldogs' 24 second quarter points to lead the well-balanced attack.

Wren did his best to keep the Bears' heads above water with six third-quarter points.

Greenville big man Gentry Lewis led off the fourth quarter with two quick buckets. But Portageville ran away with from there as they went on a 11-2 run to close out the quarter.

Portageville didn't have any double-digit scorers on the game, but had five players (Wright, A.J. Borwn, Fred Treadwell, Dometric Treadwell and Donnell Minnis) with eight points piece. The Bulldogs had ten scorers on the stat sheet on the game.

Greenville was led by Nick Wren's eight points while Lewis added six.
