BCT Day 2: Dons rebound; Kennett forfeits to Malden
BLOOMFIELD -- After a lackluster shooting performance against Richland in the first round of the Bloomfield Christmas Tournament Friday night against Richland, a disappointed Doniphan team came out with a clear mind Saturday and took care of business against Ozark Foothills Conference rival Greenville.
After a close first half, the Dons pulled away in the second half to take the 56-35 victory, sending the Bears home from tournament.
Both teams had to get warmed up quick for this one as the prior game was cut way short due to a medical situation with a Kennett player as they were playing Malden.
Andrews said his team was a little shaken up at what they saw.
Although there was obvious disappointment from being eliminated right off the bat, Doniphan coach Jason Andrews hopes his team can come together the rest of the tournament and build some confidence.
"We had high hopes to play in the finals but it happens," Andrews said. You really gotta dig deep and find some courage."
Doniphan led from start to finish, but Greenville used the long ball to keep it close in the second quarter.
Greenville hit four 3-pointers including two apiece by Jacob Wood and Dylan Rhoden.
Wood hit a 3-pointer with 33 seconds in the half to cut the Dons' lead to eight points going into the half
But Doniphan kicked it into high gear on both ends of the floor the rest of the way as they outscored the Bears, 28-15, in the second half.
Playing solidly for Doniphan was Greg Davis who scored a game-high 23 points. Davis found his his sweet spot on the floor as his jump shot from about the free throw line landed all game long. Davis had 11 2-pointers overall.
"He was able to find a seam there and get the shot off," Andrews said. "His teammates did a good job getting the ball to him."
Andrews thought his defense picked it up too throughout the game.
"I thought we played pretty good defense through stretches," Andrews added.
Gavin Wilfong ended the game with 11 points while Mitch Granier added nine.
Greenville's high-scorer was Rhoden who had 10 points.
Malden def. Kennett, forfeit
Just a couple minutes into the second consolation game of the morning, a medical situation occurred with one of Kennett's players, Randrick Carruthers, on the court.
According to tournament coordinators, the Kennett players didn't wish to continue the game, so Malden will move on to play Doniphan in the consolation semifinals on Monday.
Hayti 64, East Prairie 49
The Indians bounced back from a disappointing loss to Puxico in the first round to advance to consolation semifinals against South Pemiscot.
Hayti was led by Keenan Williams for the second straight day as he scored 13 points, with his best quarter in the second quarter when he had four points.
Hayti led by just two at halftime, but pulled away in the second half as they outscored the Eagles, 36-23.
Denzel Presberry and Doriyon West each added 12 points for Hayti.
East Prairie improved on Friday's game against Dexter where it scored just 29 points.
Ryan Jones and Conner Scott each scored 17 points for the Eagles. Twelve of Jones' 17 came in the first half.
South Pemiscot 63, East Carter 22
All South Pemiscot's Tyler Thompson wants for Christmas is his two front teeth back.
Thompson lost both his front teeth after taking a spill in the first half against the Redbirds. The junior continued playing though and still managed to amass a game-high with 18 points.
The Bulldogs' Charles Taylor added 12 points and Aaron Booker added 10.
East Carter was led by Isaiah Yates who scored 12 points, nine of which in the ninth quarter.
