The Red Devils were lack ing in both those areas a year ago when they went 6-17.
Chaffee players still won't have to duck their heads when they enter gymnasiums this season, but they will have a trio of players at 6 foot 2 in junior forwards Andy Terhune and Tyler Botkin and sophomore Jordan Yahn.
Govreau will be able to mix that combination with returning starters Michael Rutherford and Nathan Cicardi.
"The big difference from last year is we have size now with Andy, Jordan and Tyler," Govreau said. "That will give us some length down low where hopefully we'll be a lot better rebounding than we were last year." Govreau said the Red Devils only went six deep last year, but he expects to be able to play at least eight deep this season.
The Red Devils lost their leading scorer and point guard with the graduation of Taimen Taylor. Junior Jason Cicardi and sophomore Alex Crowe will take care of the point guard duties this year.
Govreau will be looking for scoring from new sources along with an added emphasis on defense.
"They're buying into that to win we're going to have to play defense," Govreau said. "And that's what we're focusing on in practice. Defense and rebounding is things we've been hitting, and will continue to."
The 5-11 Rutherford averaged 12 points per game last season. He could get some scoring help from Terhune, who moved in from Jack on, and Yahn, who led the JV in scoring as a freshman and played quarterback for the Red Devils football team this fall.
Govreau hopes to eventually get more varsity help from his sophomore class in Alex Davie, Daniel Dooley, Trevor Cannon and Zach Dannenmueller, who will start for the JV at the beginning of the season.
"Our biggest weakness is our experience, with some sophomores and juniors that haven't been up there," Govreau said. "They've played a lot, just not at the varsity level. So we may get some bumps early playing up, but we're a little deeper than last year."
Govreau said he's been particularly impressed with his team's work ethic, which he said will go a long way toward dealing with any tough times.
"They're young, but they want to win," Govreau said.
