Submitted story: SEMO Coaches pick all regional teams and runners of the year

The Southeast Missouri Cross Country Coaches is an organization composed of the cross country coaches from the 17 regional schools that currently field teams, along with area MSHSAA officials. There purpose is to promote the sport of high school cross country in the region and throughout the state. At the conclusion of each season they select All Regional Teams in two divisions: Small Schools (class 1 and 2) and Large Schools (class 3 and 4). They also select an overall outstanding male and female runner of the year. Attached are this years selections.

2011 SEMOCCCA Male Runner of the Year Brandon Shemonia

Brandon Shamonia is a Senior from Scott City High School, where in addition to cross country and track, he is active in National Honor Society, FBLA, FCCLA, Guidance Advisory Students, President of Pep Club, Future Teachers of America, and Model United Nations. He is the son of Kevin and Toni Hammes of Scott City and the late Joseph Shemonia Jr. Brandon is coached by Travis Schiwitz. This season Brandon won: Jackson Invitational (new course record 12:03), Cape Invitational, Hancock Invitational, Oak Ridge Invitational, Notre Dame Invitational, SEMO Large School Conference, and the Class 2 District 1 Meet. Brandon was the class 2 State Champion this year, beating the second place runner by nearly 34 seconds. Brandon also set a new 5K PR (Personal Record) at the Forest Park Cross Country Festival by running a 15:26.30.

2011 SEMOCCCA Female Runner of the Year Elizabeth Kiblinger

Elizabeth Kiblinger is the daughter of Mark and Debbie Kiblinger of Cape Girardeau. She currently is a senior at Notre Dame Regional High School in Cape Girardeau. Elizabeth has been involved with the sport of cross country at Notre Dame for the past three years. She has been the leader of the girl's squad for the last two seasons. Her attributes include a great attitude towards work, with a burning desire to succeed!! Elizabeth has always run workouts to the letter, as well as having served as a model athlete for other members of the team. Karen Roggow comments, "It has been a great pleasure and honor to work with Elizabeth Kiblinger for the past four years. She has both qualities needed for a great runner - talent and desire. Elizabeth's work ethic shows not only in running but in all areas of her life. She is a well-rounded person and I am confident she will succeed in any of her future endeavors."

Elizabeth is at the top of her class academically, along with being selected as a semifinalist National Merit Scholar. In cross country, this season alone, Elizabeth has ran 5 of the top 6 fastest 5Ks in Notre Dame cross country history. Among her accomplishments: 19th out of a field of 275 runners from six states and 36 teams at the prestigious Twilight Cross Country Classic in Memphis, TN.; 22nd out of a field of 195 runners from 3 states and 25 teams at the Forest Park XC Classic in St. Louis: 2nd out of a field of 122 runners in the Class 3 division at the Hancock Invitational in St. Louis; as well as finishing no lower than 3rd place in all remaining regular season races.

Elizabeth also excelled in conference, district, and state competition as well this past season, achieving All-Conference, All-District, and All-State honors.

Her accolades include: 2nd at the SEMO Conference Meet in Jackson: District Champion at the Class 3 District 1 meet held in Farmington, where she ran a school record time of 18:50.53 for 5K, setting a new school record as well as establishing a new course record at Engler Park in Farmington, Mo.; 3rd at the Class 3 Missouri State Championships, where she ran 19:33.97 for 5K, the recording the fastest time and highest finish ever by a female Notre Dame cross country runner at the State meet.

Head Coach Bill Davis comments, "One of the most outstanding female runners I have ever had the pleasure of being associated with."
