Briefly: Malden's McCoy scores five times in win over Hayti

HAYTI, Mo. -- The Malden Green Wave earned their first win over Hayti since 2006 as Romello McCoy scored five touchdowns in a 40-26 SEMO Conference South Division victory.

Malden (4-2, 3-1) got a huge fumble recovery for a touchdown by Dremond Robinson with 1:30 left in the first half to put it up 22-20.

McCoy then took a kickoff return to paydirt to open the second half from 80 yards out after receiving a pitch from a teammate in front of him and a rush down the left sideline to make it 28-20.

McCoy then put Malden up 34-20 with a 5-yard touchdown with 4:34 left in the third quarter.

The Indians (2-4, 2-2) pulled to within eight points as Michael Thomas picked off Malden quaterback Chapen Riley and returned it 65 yards with 10:09 left in the game.

Hayti then picked another pass off on Malden's ensuing offensive possession, this time by Eiljah Jones.

Hayti quaterback Karnard Humes however fumbled for a second time which was recoverd by Malden senior Mitchell Coleman at the Indian 5-yard line.

Two plays later, McCoy scored his fourth rushing touchdown of the night to make it the eventual final score.

McCoy totalled 230 yards rushing on the night on 33 attempts.

Hayti scored three touchdowns in the first half. Armond Spann returned a kick 85 yards right after McCoy scored on a 58-yard run.

With an 8-6 lead, Humes hooked up with Spann on a 20-yard touchdown.

After a McCoy 43-yard touchdown made it 14-14, Humes put the Indians back up 20-14 with 5:23 left in the second quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run.

Malden sacked Humes four times as Nick Thompson led with two, Cordiero Clark had 1 1/2, Zach Gray had one and Javiel Cooper 1/2.

Hayti had just 62 yards of total offense.
