Southeast Missouri State football coach Tom Matukewicz must've got a pretty good glimpse of the speed and athleticism of Christian Brothers High School football player Cameron Sanders when he traveled to the high school in Memphis, Tennessee, in the spring while the then-junior was participating in track and field.

"Coach Tuke and the recruiting coordinator came in last spring, saw Cameron run around on the track and just saw the explosiveness of Cameron there and offered him right there and then," CBHS interim football coach Dale Dunlap said. "They really stayed after him all football season, and locked him down a few weeks back. It's going to be a great pickup for those guys."

The cornerback, listed at 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, made his decision in early December and signed with Southeast today.

"I think Cameron, once he came on his visit, I think it was last week he really kind of summed it up, it was like home to him," Dunlap said. "He really felt close to the staff, and he really thought Cape was the place that he needed to be."

Dunlap said Sanders is capable of playing multiple positions, and he believes he could eventually transition into a linebacker for the Redhawks. Regardless of what position he ends up playing, Sanders is enthusiastic about being able to contribute to the rebuilding program.

"He knows it's a building process, and I think that's a part that excited him because it was going to give him an opportunity to have that possibility to come in and contribute to the team early," Dunlap said.
