Mules trap team opens summer as league champs

The Poplar Bluff High School Mules trap team has kicked off the summer with a major win, and they plan to stay busy throughout the summer.

After participating in the 1A-Conference 1 in the Missouri Clay Target League Tournament, the Mules walked away with first place. In Conference Targets, the Mules snagged some top awards as Eli DePew was named the Top Male Conference, while Cooper Cunnigham finished seventh. As for the Lady Mules, Emma DeGais snagged first, Abbi Gillum took second and Lucy Gillum at sixth in the Top Female Conference.

DePew also finished seventh in the overall male standings in the Missouri League and DeGais placed third, and Gillum seventh in the overall female standings.

As they start off the summer on a high note, the Mules will participate in multiple tournaments. The trap team had individual students qualify for the portion of the National event. Last year, the Mules were able to have a few players in the national tournament, and they aim to have some compete once again.

DePew qualified as a Tier-1 shooter with a season average of 23+. DeGaris and Cunningham both qualified as Tier-2 shooters with a season average of 21+, while Gillum and Rommel qualified as Tier-3 shooters with a season average of 19+.

The Mules will have a lot on their plate during summer by competing in the Missouri Clay Target High School State Tournament on June 15th at the Missouri Trapshooting Association Field in Linn Creek, MO.

They will also be competing at Mason, MI, on July 10th-15th in the USA Clay Target High School National Championship. The Mules have qualified as a Tier-1 Team in a 3-tier system of qualification.
