Eftink swings for the fences before tackling college football
SIKESTON — While most college football signees devote their summer to pumping iron and X’s and O’s, Reece Eftink is juggling dumbbells with double plays.
The recent Kelly grad is set to trade his baseball cleats for football pads this fall at Evangel University, but not before taking one last shot at glory with the Southeast Tropics, the defending Babe Ruth World Series Champions.
“It’s tough balancing baseball and preparing for the fall.,” Eftink said. “On game days, I know it’s going to be a late night because I’ll have to go lift weights afterward. But I know if I don’t then I won’t have a chance to get on the field in the fall because all these other guys aren’t skipping days.”
The multi-sport standout was a force on the gridiron for the Hawks, garnering All-SEMO Conference honors and all-region recognition three times.
Eftink also earned third-team All-State honors his sophomore year and received Academic All-State recognition three times. He proved himself a versatile offensive threat, accumulating 2,536 yards and 28 touchdowns on 340 carries over his junior and senior seasons. Defensively, he was a reliable tackler, recording 61 total tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and an interception in his senior year.
Despite his accomplishments on the field, Eftink’s decision to continue his football career at Evangel University was ultimately driven by something more than just accolades and statistics.
“The reason I chose to go to Evangel was that from the minute I stepped foot on the campus I felt like it was home,” Eftink said. “I just loved the campus and the atmosphere there. I grew up going to church in my hometown, and it is just nice that I will be able to grow my Christian faith.”
While Eftink showcased his versatility at Kelly, excelling on both sides of the ball, he’s set his sights on a singular focus at Evangel: linebacker.
This decision wasn’t made lightly, but rather through careful consideration of his strengths and passion for the game.
“I just love the physicality and going 100 percent all the time,” he said. “I love hitting people, and that’s what you need to play that spot in college.”
Eftink’s final summer with the Tropics is bittersweet. While he cherishes the opportunity to defend their World Series Title, he knows his college football commitments will pull him away before the tournament begins.
“It feels good to be world series champions it just sucks because I won’t be there this year because I have to report to college,” he said. “But I have faith in my teammates to bring it home for us.”
Despite the impending departure, Eftink is determined to make the most of his remaining time with the Tropics. He views every game, every practice, every moment in the dugout as a chance to soak in the camaraderie and create lasting memories.
“It’s meant a lot getting to play baseball one last time,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed it so much. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow and developing into the man I know I can be. I can’t wait to be back out on the field.”
As Eftink prepares to trade his Tropics jersey for an Evangel uniform, he does so with a heart full of gratitude and a mind focused on the future. Though his baseball journey may end soon, an exciting new adventure will begin.
And with his unwavering work ethic and passion for the game, there’s no doubt Eftink’s winning mindset, honed on the baseball field, will be a valuable asset to the Evangel football program.
Evangel University, located in Springfield, Missouri, competes at the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) level.
The Valor football program is a member of the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) and boasts a rich tradition of success, with multiple conference championships and appearances in the NAIA playoffs.
Known for their high-octane offense and emphasis on player development, Evangel has produced numerous All-Americans and professional football players.
