CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — The sky is the limit for Amya Bills, the rising star of girls’ track and field in the region.

The New Madrid County Central sophomore had another trophy to her collection this past summer when she earned the coveted Athlete of the Year Award in Girls’ Track and Field during the 2024 Semoball Awards on July 12 at La Croix Church.

“Winning the Semoball Award was a pleasant surprise,” she said. “It confirms that with focus, practice, and dedication, hard work pays off. I am proud of myself and look forward to next year.”

With her freshman season behind her, Amya Bills is eagerly anticipating a sophomore year that promises even greater achievements. Last year, she dominated the MSHSAA Class 3 State Track and Field Meet, capturing three state titles in her debut at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Bills' state meet performance was nothing short of legendary. She kicked off her golden weekend with a victory in the long jump, leaping an impressive 5.90 meters.

The next day, she continued her winning streak, blazing through the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.07 seconds and returning to the track to claim gold in the 200 with a time of 25.14.

After her historic performance, Bills expressed her gratitude, saying, "I would like to give honor to God for helping me accomplish great things this year. I would like to thank my coaches, school, family, friends, and community for supporting me."

Bills set a new school record in the long jump, while her time in the 200 eclipsed a mark that had stood for decades.

She became the first female athlete from NMCC to win a state title since 1997 and the only athlete from the school to capture three championships in a single season.

As NMCC coach Jarrett Allen put it, “[Bills’] performance was nothing short of incredible."
