SIKESTON — New Madrid County Central showcased some promising signs during a four-team jamboree at Sikeston Public Schools Stadium on Friday, August 23.

Despite a few miscues, the overall performance left the Eagles’ coaching staff encouraged.

“Overall, I was pleased,” said NMCC Tyler Fullhart. “I saw a lot of really good things, like guys flying around. They played together and that’s something we stressed over the summer. They had each other’s back, played with a lot of passion and made plays. But there is still quite a bit we need to clean up.”

Erik Tillmon showcased his versatility and playmaking ability. The senior defensive back and receiver made several key plays, including an interception against Sikeston. His performance suggests that he could be a major contributor to the Eagles' success this season.

“[Tillmon] really stood out, making some plays on both sides of the ball,” Fullhart said. “I also had some linemen who did some great things. [Seniors] Zach Gamblin and Marvion Cranford played great.”

Offensive guard Issiac Smith, a towering figure at over 6-feet-4-inches, also showcased his immense potential. His combination of size, strength, and agility is a rare talent for a high school freshman, suggesting he could be a future star.

“[Smith] has some things to get right, but he’s doing great and we’re real proud of him,” Fullhart said.

Another standout performer at the jamboree was junior receiver Malaki Hughes. Hughes, a converted lineman, showcased his athleticism with a spectacular touchdown catch of over 40 yards. After making the catch, Hughes used his speed and agility to break free from defenders and outrun them to the end zone.

“He’s really taken on the role,” Fullhart said. “Of course, [a position change like that] is the best news in the world for a lineman. It’s been a dream come true for him and he’s making the most of it.”

Sophomore quarterback Nolan Mungle looked comfortable in the pocket and delivered the ball on time, and the Eagles' freshman class made a strong impression.

“I’m really proud of how our freshman played and kept their composure,” Fullhart said. “That’s a big jump, from eighth-grade ball to Friday night football, even if it is a jamboree. These are good teams that are coached really well and I was proud of the way our team competed.”

NMCC opens the season at Cape Central on Friday.
