Lady Bearcats sweep past Arcadia Valley in season-opening win

The Dexter Lady Bearcats volleyball team started its season in strong fashion Tuesday night when took a 25-17, 25-23, 25-14 straight-set victory over Arcadia Valley at the Bearcat Event Center.

In other action Tuesday, Bernie improved to 2-0 on the season after taking a 25-11, 24-26, 25-12, 25-22 win over Sikeston, while Advance swept Richland 25-6, 25-15, 25-14. Bloomfield improved to 1-1 on the season after the Lady Wildcats swept Clearwater 26-24, 25-23, 25-21, while Puxico fell at home to Scott City 25-14, 23-25, 25-13, 25-10.

Dexter (1-0) got a strong night from Kate Nichols, who led the team with nine kills and 10 digs while also serving a pair of aces.

Cali White, Mauriona Menley and Karis Kennedy each had three aces, while Liz Bolin had four blocks (three solo) and Kennedy added two. Avery Riley had seven digs.

The Lady Bearcats are back in action Thursday when they head to Jackson. Dexter comes home Monday to take on Saxony Lutheran and hosts Cape Central on Tuesday before heading to Richland on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Dexter Bearcats cross country team kicked off its season last Saturday at the Memphis Twilight run in Tennessee and finished 12th in the 41-team field.

“(Last Saturday's) performance is a great first step,” Dexter coach Josh Dowdy said. “This should give the boys some confidence as we head into next week when we host some of our local schools. I am anxious to see where we stack up.”

Cameron Bell led the Bearcats by placing 33rd with a time of 17:11, while Ben Dowdy finished 50th (17:31.78), Jaxon King was 70th (18:04.66), Blake Lee took 92nd (18:32.32), Daniel Williams was 140th (19:33.58), Gabe Proctor finished 209th (21:02.32) and Peyton Ballance placed 279th (23:36.84).

On the girls side, Quincey McLaughlin finished 215th with a time of 30:25.10.
