Roundup: Jackson VB starts season with tri-meet win

The Jackson volleyball team showcased their prowess in a season-opening tri-match held in Carterville, Ill., on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

The Indians delivered a commanding performance, securing victories against both Carterville and Pinckneyville.

In their first match of the evening, Jackson faced off against Carterville and emerged victorious in two decisive sets, with scores of 25-6 and 25-11.

Amery Winston led the defensive efforts with 11 digs and contributed offensively with 3 aces. Her defensive prowess and serving accuracy were instrumental in the victory over Carterville.

Kateryna Elefson was a force at the net, recording 7 kills, while Lauren Dorey orchestrated the offense with 14 assists. The team's strategy of aggressive serving and solid defense paid off, leaving Carterville struggling to keep up.

The Indians continued their winning streak in the second match of the evening, defeating Pinckneyville in straight sets, 25-11 and 25-15.

Katy St. John led the offensive charge with 12 kills, showcasing her ability to find gaps in the Pinckneyville defense. Avery Brune was a standout on both ends of the court, recording 12 digs and adding 5 kills to her tally. Lynn-Avery Crowley also played a crucial role in the back row, contributing 8 digs. The team's cohesive play and strategic execution were key factors in their triumph.

Elefson and St. John's offensive contributions were pivotal in both matches, while Dorey's playmaking abilities ensured the smooth execution of the team's game plan.

As the season progresses, the Indians will look to build on this momentum and continue their pursuit of excellence on the court. Jackson will host Dexter on Thursday and will also host a tournament with Northpoint (MS), Dyer County (TN), and St. Clair (MO), with games starting at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. 

Tennis: Jackson 8, Festus 1

The Jackson tennis team continued its impressive run this season with a commanding 8-1 victory over Festus on Wednesday, Sept. 4, in Festus, Mo.

Jackson's prowess was evident in the singles matches, where the team won all but one. Keera Newcomer and Ella Montgomery led the charge with flawless 8-0 victories, demonstrating their skill and determination. The overall singles match record for the Indians in this game was a testament to their strength and depth, setting the tone for the rest of the match.

The doubles matches further highlighted Jackson's superiority. Bailey Rees and Ella Montgomery teamed up to deliver a perfect 8-0 victory, underscoring their synergy and tactical acumen. The Indians swept all three varsity doubles matches against Festus, showcasing their comprehensive preparation and teamwork.

The Indians, now boasting a season record of 5-0-1, showcased their dominance on the court. As they prepare to face Kennett with Holcomb on Thursday, Sept. 5, the team remains focused on maintaining their undefeated streak.
