A GOOD DAY FOR THE MULES: Poplar Bluff teams go 4-0 Monday
It was definitely a good day for the Poplar Bluff Mules and Lady Mules sports teams on Monday as all four varsity teams in action on Monday — softball, volleyball, girls tennis and boys soccer — picked up wins.
The Lady Mules softball team shut out Kelly 3-0 at Strenfel Field, while the volleyball team picked up a 25-13, 16-25, 16-25, 25-14, 15-8 win at the Poplar Bluff High School gym. The Lady Mules tennis team shut out Caruthersville 9-0 and the Mules soccer team capped the sweep with a 4-1 win at Fredericktown.
SOFTBALL
Poplar Bluff 3, Kelly 0
Lady Mules hurler Molly Eason turned in one of her best — if not her best — game of the season on Monday as she shut out perennial power Kelly on just three hits.
“It was definitely a step in the right direction beating a well-coached team in Kelly,” Poplar Bluff coach Aaron Duncan said of Monday's win.
Kelly's Blaire Riley got a hit to lead off the game, but was thrown out at second trying to stretch a single into a double. Eason then retired the next 19 batters before pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh inning to end the game.
Eason struck out four while allowing no walks to the Lady Hawks (12-7) as 55 of her 73 pitches went for strikes. The hurler also helped her own cause in the bottom of the first inning as Elizabeth Blancett scored on Eason's grounder for the game's first run.
Ireland Byrne later added a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 3-0 and give the Lady Mules two valuable insurance runs.
Poplar Bluff (6-8) hits the road to take on Cape Central on Thursday.
VOLLEYBALL
Poplar Bluff 3, Northwest 2
The Lady Mules won their second match in a row as they rallied from a 2-1 deficit against the visiting Northwest Lions from Cedar Hill in Jefferson County.
After Poplar Bluff (15-9) won the first set, the Lions won the next two sets by identical 25-16 scores and were on the verge of completing their own comeback. However, the Lady Mules won the fourth and fifth sets to seal the win.
Poplar Bluff plays Thursday at the SEMO Conference Tournament in Cape Girardeau. The Lady Mules are the sixth seed and will open against No. 11 Oran at 3 p.m. The winner of that contest faces third-seeded Cape Central in quarterfinal action.
GIRLS TENNIS
Poplar Bluff 9, Caruthersville 0
The Lady Mules improved to 5-2 on the season and won their fourth dual in their last five tries as they dominated the host Lady Tigers.
Poplar Bluff was at Kennett on Tuesday and will play at North County on Wednesday before returning to Kennett on Thursday for the rescheduled SEMO Conference Tournament.
The Lady Mules continue their road swing by heading to West Plains on Friday and Festus on Monday before returning home next Tuesday to take on Dexter for senior day.
BOYS SOCCER
Poplar Bluff 4, Fredericktown 1
At Fredericktown, the Mules won their third match in a row and improved to 7-3 on the season by defeating the host Blackcats.
Poplar Bluff was at Hillsboro on Tuesday and heads to Camdenton this weekend to play in the Laker Shootout against Jefferson City, Rolla and Hillsboro.
The Mules' next home match is Oct. 15, against Saxony Lutheran.
