Portageville overpowers Sikeston in straight sets

SIKESTON — Portageville extended its winning streak against Sikeston with a resounding victory at the Field House on Monday, Sep. 30.

Portageville (23-3-2) controlled the match from start to finish, winning in straight sets over Sikeston (4-13-0).

“Overall, it was a really good night,” said Portageville coach Sasha Kellams. “Our communication was good and our girls are focusing on the right things. It’s good to see it all paying off.”

The match began with an intense first set, where Portageville's Glo Farmer showcased her athleticism early on. Farmer's three kills gave Portageville a 4-3 advantage.

Sikeston fought back, tying the game at 7-7 with kills from Aubreigh Landers and Khielynn Pobst.

The teams continued to trade points, with Sikeston tying it again at 12-12 after a block by Ruby Osborn.

However, Portageville pulled ahead to win the first set 25-20, thanks to an ace by Farmer and back-to-back kills from Liza Priggel in the closing moments.

“[Liza Priggel] is so smart,” Kellams said. “She’s able to utilize that intelligence on the volleyball court, seeing holes and finding ways out there to score.”

Portageville's dominance became more pronounced in the second and third sets. They won the second set 25-16 and the third set 25-14, showcasing their superior teamwork and skill.

Farmer led Portageville with an impressive performance, recording 11 digs, 10 kills, an ace, and one assist. Irby also shone with 15 digs, seven kills, two assists, an ace, and a block. Bryleigh Adams added seven kills, five digs, and three assists, while Liza Priggel contributed seven kills and two digs. Mia Scherer orchestrated the offense with 17 assists, nine digs, and five aces. Maggie Priggel chipped in with three kills and two digs, Juju Priggel had 12 digs and two kills, and Lexi Priggel rounded out the stats with 14 assists, eight digs, three aces, and a kill.

On the Sikeston side, Landers led with six kills. Leighton Copeland added eight digs, four kills, and an ace. Pobst contributed three kills and a block, while Claudia Rowland had two kills and an ace. Kennedy Watson provided 16 assists, eight digs, and two kills. Osborn recorded two kills, two aces, one dig, and a block. Ava Martinez had six digs, an ace, and an assist, and Izzy Mitchell added four digs and an assist. Bailey Null led the defense with 20 digs and one assist, Katie Rose Ressell had four digs, and Lexton Hammontree contributed one dig.

Portageville travels to Bernie (9-6-3), while Sikeston will take on Scott City (8-5-2) in the opening round of the SEMO Conference at the Cape SportsPlex on Thursday, Oct. 3.
