Booker captures conference crown for Lady Mules

KENNETT — Kaitlyn Booker continued her strong run as a girls tennis player for the Poplar Bluff Lady Mules by adding a SEMO Conference individual championship to her trophy case during Thursday’s SEMO Conference Tournament at Kennett High School.

She wasn’t the only Lady Mule to play well Thursday, as Molly Maurer finished fourth in the conference.

Kennett repeated as conference champion.

On Friday, Poplar Bluff defeated West Plains 8-1, with Booker, Maurer, Hannah Kee, Elle Wiseman and Meaghan Popp all picking up convincing wins in singles play and with the team also winning all three doubles matches.

The Lady Mules are at Festus on Monday.

VOLLEYBALL

Dexter takes second, Lady Mules finish seventh at SEMO tourney

At Cape Girardeau on Thursday, the Dexter Bearcats came within a win of capturing the SEMO Conference Tournament, while the Poplar Bluff Lady Mules tied for seventh.

The Bearcats beat Scott City 25-18, 25-21 in the quarterfinals, then downed Cape Central 25-15, 25-20 in the semis before falling to Jackson 25-13, 25-16 in the championship match.

Meanwhile, Poplar Bluff beat Oran 25-12, 25-7, but lost to Cape Central 25-19, 25-12 in the quarterfinals and fell to Scott City 25-23, 25-15 in a consolation match.

The Lady Mules host Doniphan on Monday, while Dexter takes on Puxico with a chance to clinch the Stoddard County Activities Association title outright.

SWIMMING

Poplar Bluff 88, Farmington 70

At the Black River Coliseum, the Mules swam past Farmington with several strong performances, including winning the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Poplar Bluff hosts Notre Dame on Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

Cape Central 8, Poplar Bluff 5

At Cape Girardeau, the Lady Mules could not overcome a five-run fifth inning by the host Tigers.

Poplar Bluff led 5-2 going to the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Tigers scored five times in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

Elizabeth Blancett had two hits in the loss for Poplar Bluff.

On Friday, the Lady Mules defeated the St. Louis Patriots 21-0.

Poplar Bluff (7-9) hosts West Plains on Monday.
