KENNETT, Mo. - Kennett Indian soccer picked up its second win of the season after battling to a 1-0 victory over Westwood Baptist Sr.

The winning goal was scored by sophomore Jaden Ramirez and was assisted by senior captain Logan Decker.

This was the second time these two teams have met this season, with Westwood Baptist taking the first game 3-2. Head coach Jeremy Westerfield was happy to steal this win back for their last home game.

“That was the momentum we needed for these kids,” Westerfield said. “After having all the ties we’ve had this season, a win feels good. That was a competitive game we played and we were pretty confident for tonight, going into Senior Night, that it would be a competitive match.”

Now the Indians head into the last two games of the season with a 5-6-3 record. This was a huge improvement from their 1-12 record from their inaugural season last year.

Along with the win, the soccer team also took the time to recognize their graduating seniors, some of which helped get this program started at Kennett last year.

The first senior to be recognized was Hayley Bagwell who joined the team last year as a junior in its inaugural season. It was also her first year playing soccer.

She plans on attending Three Rivers College and earning her associate degree in dental hygiene.

“Hayley played for us last year,” Westerfield said. “This year she decided she wanted to help the team but she didn’t want to play, so she helped in other important ways. She helps at practice getting equipment out and sorting equipment and organizing. She also keeps our stat book at the game so she has been instrumental for us and each of her teammates.”

Logan Decker was the next senior honored, who is completing his first season on the KHS soccer team. He played club soccer for eight years prior to joining Kennett’s team in its second year of operations. He notes his favorite memory on the team were the bus rides home and singing to Katy Perry with his teammates. He plans on enlisting into the U.S. National Guard upon graduation.

“Logan is our captain this year and this was his first season with us,” Westerfield said. “He’s been a valuable asset to the team. He's a good kid, good player and a good leader.”

Trey Heeb was also recognized as a senior in his second year on the team. He joined the program in its first season as a junior and helped shape the roster this year as a captain. Prior to Kennett, he also played eight years of club soccer. He looks to attend culinary school upon graduation, acknowledging Kennett’s culinary instructor Don Franklin as having an impact on his high school career.

The fourth senior to be recognized was Kamilah Martinez, the oldest of three Martinez’ on the team this year. She was on the soccer team for both years it was offered at Kennett. She also played club soccer for six years prior to joining the Kennett Indians. She also noted her favorite memory from the team was traveling and being able to take naps on the bus before and after away games. After graduation, Martinez will continue her post-secondary education at the University of Missouri in Columbia. (Mizzou).

The final senior was Meagan Spielman, who was an advocating voice to implement a soccer team at Kennett last year as a junior. She has played club soccer for 10 years, as her father the Honorable Judge John C. Spielman has organized little league soccer in Kennett for over 13 years. She will attend the University of Iowa after graduation and major in Biology.

“These three all played for me last season, but they played different positions,” Westerfield said. “We tried a few different things this year and luckily it worked out for us. They trusted us to go ahead and get in those new positions and they worked hard in those positions and they really led the team this year. They’ve really motivated our underclassmen this year, all four of the seniors.”

The soccer team will play their last game of the season at Saxony Lutheran on Tuesday, Oct. 29. This game will start at 4 p.m.
