Kennett kicks off season with Jamboree
KENNETT, Mo. - The Indians of Kennett High School got their season squared off on Nov. 21 with the Kennett Jamboree.
To start their 2024-2025 campaign, Kennett hosted Dexter, Holcomb and Twin Rivers.
The jamboree was a good test for Kennett’s head coach Erika Cobb to see how well her team has progressed with only a few weeks of practice.
Each game consisted of one half, or two six-minute quarters, before the teams moved on to the next game.
Kennett faced off against Dexter for the first competition, where the Indians outscored the Bearcats 20-15.
Despite their strong start against Dexter, Kennett dropped their next two games to Twin Rivers and Holcomb.
The Twin River and Kennett game came off to a slow offensive start, with neither team scoring in the opening minutes. It eventually ended as the lowest-scoring game of the night with Twin Rivers winning 11-8.
The second game of the night, before Kennett and Twin Rivers faced off, featured Holcomb and Twin Rivers.
According to Holcomb’s head coach Alexa Stockton, her team struggled getting warmed up in the first few games losing to Twin Rivers and Dexter.
“It just took us a little bit to get going those first two games,” Stockton said. “I felt like we were in slow motion and kind of just watching. We played pretty skittish and scared.”
They were finally able to grab a one-point win over Kennett, 21-20, in the final competition of the night.
Junior guard Ava Gurley led the charge in Holcomb’s final game. She knocked down three 3-pointers and added a few assists, finally getting into a rhythm.
“I felt like they finally warmed up and got going,” Stockton said. “That was the team I’ve seen in practice lately. They usually have a faster pace, they get up and get after it and I was glad to see that in the last game.”
Kennett did not fade away too easily as sophomore Alyce Edwards came down in the final stretch hitting a few key shots to keep the Indians in the game.
Despite her efforts along with the back-and-forth scoring, Kennett ran out of time to complete the comeback.
Stockton was happy her Holcomb girls pulled out one win on the night but was not satisfied with their play overall.
“I’m ready to get this season started,” Stockton said. “I think we are all just tired of running through the motions at practice and we are ready to start playing. This gave us a little taste and now we have a couple of practices to see what we struggled in and tweak a few things before we get things going.”
Due to the jamboree style of play and only completing one half, these games will not count towards the official records of any team.
Kennett’s next competition will be in Van Buren for the Current River Challenge on Nov. 29. Their first official home game will fall on Thursday, Dec. 12 against New Madrid County Central.
Holcomb’s first official game will see them travel to Jonesboro, Ar. to face NEACHE on Dec. 2.
The Hornet's first home game will be on Dec. 10 against Hayti.
