East Prairie Lady Eagles determined to improve one game at a time
Change is in the air as the East Prairie girls’ basketball team begins a new season, determined to turn past struggles into future triumphs.
While the team faces challenges, there’s potential for growth. Returning All-District guard Maddie Powers will be a key contributor, and the addition of senior Chloe Jackson, a talented softball player, could provide a much-needed offensive spark.
However, the team will need to find consistent scoring and defensive intensity to compete.
“Our goal is to be better every day,” said East Prairie coach Scot Davis.
Powers’ experience and skill will be crucial as the team navigates the challenges of the upcoming season. Jackson, who returns after a season sidelined by injury, is expected to be a significant asset.
Her return is a much-needed boost for the team, which is looking to leverage its height and size to improve rebounding—a critical area where they have struggled in the past.
“We do have a solid average height and size for our team,” Davis said. “Hopefully, this translates to being able to be better at rebounding than in past seasons.”
In an effort to capitalize on the strengths of the current roster, the coaching staff has decided to overhaul both the defensive and offensive strategies.
This shift aims to better align with the players’ capabilities and to address the weaknesses that have plagued the team in previous seasons.
“We are changing up our defense and offense from the past two seasons to try and fit who we have on the team this season,” Davis said.
While the team has yet to experience a winning season in recent memory, the focus remains on incremental improvement and building a foundation for future success.
The realistic outlook acknowledges the possibility of a challenging season ahead, but it also emphasizes growth and development as key objectives.
East Prairie opens the season at Charleston on Dec. 2 and will compete in Class 3, District 1 this season.
