GIDEON, Mo. - The Kennett Indians faced off against the South Pemiscot Bulldogs on the third day of play at the Gideon Bulldog Classic.

The Indians lost 70-46 in the semifinal match, dropping their chance to play in the championship game.

South Pemiscot came out the gate hot against Kennett. Junior Jaterion Smith got the game going, knocking down an uncontested three in the opening play. He would hit two three-pointers in the first half of play.

Kennett’s Sire Thomas, also a junior, would immediately respond by driving to the basketball for a two-point layup.

A series of turnovers due to the Bulldogs’ full-court pressure limited Kennett to only two more field goals in the first quarter. They trailed 20-13 after the first quarter.

With even more pressure, Kennett was held at only two points compared to South Pemiscot’s 17 second-quarter points. This was the lowest-scoring quarter of the game for the Indians resulting in a 37-15 deficit at halftime.

The Indians would make up for the low-scoring first-half putting 16 more points on the board in the third quarter. Senior Dyson Watson put up eight points in the third quarter after only having two points in the first half.

Despite his efforts, the Bulldogs pushed their lead and outscored Kennett with 22 third-quarter points.

This was South Pemiscot’s best quarter, led by junior Robert Farmer III. He knocked down two three-pointers for six points in the third quarter after only having three points in the first quarter and being held scoreless in the second. Now, the Bulldogs entered the final eight minutes with a 59-31 lead over Kennett.

Kennett was finally able to outscore South Pemiscot in the final quarter 15-11, but it was too late for a comeback. Watson and fellow senior Hayden Gilmore each had four points in the fourth quarter to finish with 14 and nine total points, respectively. Watson shot 100% from the free-throw line, going 6-6.

Sophomore Antonio Flakes also had a perfect game at the free-throw line, 2-2, and finished with four points.

Junior Tyquavious (Ty) Jones had seven points as the only Kennett player with a three-point field goal.

South Pemiscot had three players score in double digits. Farmer III had 17 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Meanwhile, Smith finished with 15 points and senior Terrell Boyd put up 12 points. Their efforts lifted the Bulldogs to 2-0 on the season and put them in the championship game of the Bulldog Classic against East Prairie.

For the Indians, they will fall to 1-2 on the season. This loss pinned them to play Hayti for third place on Friday, Dec. 6.
